Kids Downloading music legally?

Hey,
I've never really downloaded any music before, but the CD's I like are becoming a pain to get.
I'm tired of paying $15 & $20 for CD's that have to be shipped halfway across the globe, or waiting for weeks to get them... So, I'm thinking about downloading music.

Is there any GOOD way to download albums and songs that WON'T get me sued? All I hear about now is people getting sued for music trading, bla bla bla... I wouldn't mind paying something for the downloads... I just don't know where to go.

I suppose I could just start listening to something else, but every time I try and listen to "regular" music, it just doesn't work out too well... LOL.

I posted an article in another thread
http://www.techimo.com/forum/t104992.html

Compares the top 10 services.

TKOP, the problem with iTunes is if you want to buy an MP3 player you HAVE to use an iPod to play the AAC format which is propietary to Apple

I have a creative nomad zen xtra (great ) it will support pretty much every other format .... except AAC because of Apple not allowing others to use it.

I also have a Zen Extra Love it too... but I love the price even more I buy off Itunes normally, or walmart.com if they have it as its cheaper, and it isnt a clean album. When downloading from Itunes I still havent figured out the best way to get them to my jukebox, so far I like to have a CD copy of the music I buy cause my brothers car only has a CD player so I need CDs to listen to in the car and after I burn the CD with Itunes I just let the Jukebox Center rip it and put it to my Zen

yeah... I knew it was from Ukraine... But I've just never heard of the site before.
They have a bunch of artists that I want to try out... But don't want to unless someone else has dealt with this site before, or at least knows that they're reputable...

Alternatives to MP3.COM for independent artist tracks
http://www.usalug.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1214

You have to be a member to read it... but I'll list some of the websites you can look at. I realize not all of these are top 40 groups...but more independent groups.... many just starting out, many fairly established.

Free Classical or Contemporary Music

Groove Embassy Records supports the Free Music Philosophy. (See below for copyleft information.) (That's "Free" as in "Free Speech," not "Free Beer".) We also support the Ogg Vorbis open-source music format, and we strongly encourage you to use it. Here is a direct link to software that will allow you to encode and play Ogg files.

http://redvinegar.net/music.html
redvinegar is sometimes rock, sometimes country, sometimes folk, sometimes dreamy, but is always good solid music with a heart and soul. redvinegar is currently tim hawkinson, phil kuhl, aaron moon, and peter peterson.

The Lune Rouge Free Sounds Database

http://www.hydrophones.com/MAI-Audio...downloads.html
Free music downloads in the open standard Ogg Vorbis format demonstrating a Marschall Acoustics Instruments digital audio workstation and theatre organ emulator. All works are copyleft so copy and distribute as much as you want.

http://www.fairforshare.com/
FairForShare is public music sharing via html, ftp and mp3 files. The artists have provided the songs contained within for free, non-commercial redistribution over the Internet. It is NOT a P2P Network, merely a method to let the Artist control which songs are shared.

http://www.dmoz.org/Arts/Music/Bands_and_Artists/
Dmoz lists over 48,000 bands... I'm sure there are a few downloads for free in there somewhere

http://music.dmusic.com/
What is DMusic?
Aside from being the oldest online digital music community, DMusic is a hosting platform for artists. We have built website technology to allow musicians to plug their official websites in to our platform, enabling them to add far more interactive components to their website than they normally could. DMusic.com is a portal front end for all of these sites, plus the hundreds of artists who sign up for simple templated pages they can administer through some of the same tools the official websites have.

http://www.iuma.com/
Using the site is easy. Go to the home page, find a genre of music you like, and start listening to new music. You can sample it in Real Audio and then pull the MP3s when you find something you like. You can also visit Artist's IUMA web site and interact with the artist through email and message boards. If you've got work to do, we suggest you launch IUMA Radio and let your favorite genre play in the background while you work

There are more sites listed in the thread..... but you'll have to go get them yourself

I just heard on the news Walmart is offering (or is going to be offering) tunes at .88 a pop, which is .11 per pop cheaper than the rest...
