DUI Scarlet Letter

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,114914,00.html

Interesting method
If you get busted with a DUI they change your license plate to a yellow with red text to flag you as a previous DUI.

I think its a good idea, but as mentioned in the story ... it'd suck for a wife or husband to have to drive it also.

BUT... they should of thought of that before driving drunk.

i think it's okay. I know people are against it because it could unfavorably reflect on them (innocent spouse, relative, whatever..) but hey, that helps put more pressure on the guilty one to seek help or practice more self control. I give it a thumbs-up!

How long will the convicted person have to have the plates?

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Here they have the breath testing lockout devices installed if they get repeated DUI convictions, even after having thier licence revoked for a while. Only works in the one vehicle, though. Same as this would.

Not sure about the scarlet letter, though. We already have plates like that, indicating it's a parlimentary vehicle, I think. Already gives us a good reason to avoid those!

Cheers

Here, it would pretty much be one in the same.

hehe that was my thoughts exactly. i actually live about an hour from new mexico so i see their plates all the time and wouldn't think anything of it. maybe if they had DUI printed on it in light lettering so as not to obscure the license number?

also i noticed it said these were only handed out to those with a "court-restricted license" (bottom of the page), which implies to me that these are repeat offenders.
