Datsun 4 cylinder engine, perhaps 2200cc, maybe

8 spark plugs, 2 distributors, 2 coils, double the fun, double the trouble.

Single Overhead Cam, double roller cam chain. No belt on this baby.

4:56 Ratio rear end

~135 HP @ 5600 rpm

*TIP*

Adjust the valves a bit on the tight side, except the intake valves put them .0005 on the loose side.

Bump the timing to 12 BTDC

Cut the snorkel off the breather, leave the hot air intake just cut off the small end.

When you blow the head gasket, have em shave .020 off the head & get the thinnest head gasket you can find.

Run 92 octane fuel at 5,000 ft altitude or less, 89 octane in the high altitudes.

Clean the carb with some Chemtool B-12 by Berryman, pour it in the tank per directions. Then change fuel filter.

Adjust the clutch to release just off the floor about 3.5"

Now, you got yourself a Ranger eater

211,000 miles has just about gotten the rings broken in against the block.

Those engines in that era of P/U were unholy powerful, they also will bolt up to the older Datsun 510 series cars, and promptly smoke the rear tires up

Now, what kind of truck is that again, don't think I've ever seen one like it.

That rocks! It needs to be put on 33s though. Even if it's only a 2WD. :P At least it will look mean! Put a locker in the back and fagettaboutit!

Extra cool! And only 211K on the clock!, a friends Dad bought one when released new to replace the ageing Chevy we were loading our bikes into to go riding---first thing he did when he brought it home from the dealer was run down each side of it with a ball peen hammer so we wouldnt be worried about putting scrapes on his new truck... (he wanted us to TREAT it like his old Chevy---WHAT A DAD!!!)

Truck is still goin today---durable as heck, unfortunately it outlived my pals Dad :-(

Yup, its a 1982, 4 banger, 2.2Z, 8 plug, One distributor (8 connectors), 720 model Kingcab, Datsun pick'em up truck. Doesn't leak any oil, or burn it.... Not much to look at but....who cares...
I just wish it had enough room to stuff one of the few 280Z engines I have stored in dads barn....
I have had many (almost all my cars) Datsuns/Nissans for the past 12 years.. Piece of cake to work on.
The butterfly is missing of the carb, so it takes a bit to warm up but....for $400 I can't complain. It will do for what I need it for, carrying stuff to build the new house and taking the trash...I hated taking trash in my car.

Also one of the reasons we bought our 1999 Maxima 2 years ago.....no more belt....has the chain

For some reason I have always wanted a beater.....something I never have to wash or wory about dents....I have fulfilled that dream.

Nice tips by the way DOC.....

I drive a '99 Maxima also. Nissans are great vehicles and other than a strut tower stabilizer bar I added it's stock and drives great. The price was at least $4,000 less than a comparably equipped Camry and much less than an Avalon.

My wife drives a low mileage '95 Altima that except for the known problem with a front end oil leak/drip has been a very good car also.

The truck of yours is just getting broken in. The Nissan newsgroups have people on them who report 250K or more on both the 4 cylinder engines and the V6 engines and with no engine work other than replacing the timing chain or the -ugh- timing belt. I understand that the chains may warn you by starting to get noisy before they go so you have some small measure of assurance that they MAY not go unexpectedly and the pistons and valves will tangle with each other.

However I think I'd replace the timing chain unless you know it's been done in the past 80 or 100K miles.

A Buick 231 V6 drops into those pretty nice. I have done one. We put a 4spd behind it also. Good sleeper.
Call Moser Eng. Have them cut down a 8 3/4 Dodge rear end. You would be set to go.
The dodge doesn't need new axles on a cut down. It is the only rear axle with the splines on the axles smaller than the axle dia.
