Firefighters leave stove on, burn kitchen

Red, Hot and Humiliated

Firefighters in Melbourne, Florida, left safety on the back burner when they scrambled for an emergency call Thursday. The end result: A pot left on a firehouse stove sparked a grease fire that caused an estimated $75,000 to $100,000 damage. "Firefighters are human and we make mistakes just like the public does," said Melbourne Fire Battalion Chief Bobby Apel. Firefighters returned from the emergency to battle the homegrown blaze, which burned the station's kitchen and living quarters. "We can learn from this," Apel said. "Everybody needs to make sure (they) turn appliances off before we leave home."
