and within a year - I was running little bikes with engines turning 11,000 rpm and scaring the little old ladies. My kid brother was doing that kind of stuff - but never competitive .
wonder how we ever got through being kids without getting busted up bad.

I used to race at Teen Center in Canoga Park CA, which was a one of the ABA tracks. Believe it or not, I places second at the national on 20" class... I used to be in to it big time when I was younger. I also used to race at Devonshire Downs which was one of the NBA tracks...I still have one of my race bikes. It's a Redline PL-24 with Ambrosia heat treated rims, double butted spokes, GT selaed bearing hubs, Redline flight cranks, Hutch Bearclaw pedals, DK Gooseneck, etc... That thing was custom built for racing cruiser class and costed over $800 USD at the time which I think was early 80's... Now it's probably worth nothing! LOL

The only BMX I had was a Raleigh Burner with Skyway Mags like in this pic but it was blue and had stunt-nuts, I never did any stunts though

I nearly got a Mongoose Maneuver some years ago. It's like a cross between a mountain bike n a BMX (I think it's called a trials bike or somethin). I ended up getting a proper mountain bike though.

I always wanted the other one...not the Mongoose but ....um, what was it?

Oh yeah! Redline. Man, those was cool.

Especially that Redline Monoshock. You know, this guy:

One of the older "7th graders" had one of these. He was bad. I never got one myself. I never even had any idea they became so rare (see here). But I did get some strange kinda mutated half-breed from Huffy that had the shock absorber in the center of the frame. I give my parents credit for at least trying to meet my lofty demands. Little did they know that the word Huffy is synonymous with the phrase "just go ahead and make fun of me until I'm ready to cry or fight". Boy, that bike weighed a ton. But it had a comfy seat. and the stupid shock actually functioned, so it was great for the all day rides just cruising from neighborhood to neighborhood.
