Strange behavior trait women do
I don't know how many of you are into the retail business. Not huge chain stores type mind you. But little mom and pop shops.
Anyways, I have noticed a strange trait in behavior in women in our store. I can almost predict with 99% accuracy if a woman comes into my shop if she will buy or not.
Women who will NOT purchase anything will always walk around with thier arms crossed over thier chest.
Women who are interested in a purchase will have her arms down at her side.
I find this really strange. What causes women to display behavior like that? I am pretty sure its an unconsioucs act, but one that I noticed.
Today I saw tony talking to this woman and I just started laughing because im thinking, don't waste your time on her because she ain't gonna buy anything because her arms are crossed. Sure enough about 1 minute later she says thanks and walks out.
I am really baffled by this behavior, in someways its good because I can better determine if I should spend time with that customer or not.
Now Men is another story altogether. I have not noticed any one common behavior trait in men who do not purchase anything.
Unlike women they tend to display the EXACT same behaivor.
Strange.
Wonder if any of you in the retail or small stores notice anything like this before?

Interesting observation! I guess women cross their arms to prevent themselves from grabbing items and buying (or shoplifting ) them.
Most men have an actual goal when they walk into a store, that is to buy something. |

From what I have seen its easiest to spot some one who wants to buy stuff by how they are looking around but that is nothing new. If you see someone just strolling around looking at just about everything they are probaly just passing the time and enjoying them selves but if you see someone looking around quickly its probably cause they are looking for one thing in particular that they want to buy.

A friend of mine took some phyc classes and told me about this. Its one of those subconscious acts performed that shows defensiveness, or an inability to listen to what someone is saying, etc. Like when people get in an arguement and one crosses their arms, you can be sure they aren't listening anymore. In the store, I guess these gals (women do show this crossed arms trait more often than men) are subconsciously reminding themselves they are not here to buy.

IDK... I will pay attention to that this weekend at my job.
(Hardware Store)
However, when I cross my arms, it means I am listening with greater interest / intent. Go figure.

Maybe some kind of prehistoric defense mechanism.

Interesting you say this because that is what it appears to be. As if its an defensive stance. Sometimes they are in there for longer than a 1/2 hour, sometimes as short as just a few minutes. The length of stay does not seem to matter. But it does seem to matter if thier arms are crossed or when it comes to purchasing.
Its farily easy to spot who will or not by behavior, but as I stated the men are harder to read then the women. Women you can read almost dead on just by the position of thier arms.
It will be interesting to see if others notice this in thier stores after this being mentioned.
Gait, im not talking about sex or anything to do with any type of sexual behavior. So I highly doubt this is any way related. Please refrain from sexual related comments. Thanks.

while the sexual remark isnt really needed for the community I think it is part of a womans mental thinking about the crossing her arms in a defensive/no stance which would go to just about anything in their lives. Women seem to need support in their desicions weather it is from friends or them selves.
*me wonders if the women of the board will attack em for this *
