This chaps my hide...!

Clear Channel Communications "severes ties" with Bubba the Love Sponge. Popular radio host, Todd Clem, better known as Bubba the Love Sponge is apparently getting the axe.

WFLA radio Tampa is reporting that 98 Rock and Clear Channel Communications have "severed ties" with Bubba. The station said a press release from Clear Channel Communications headquarters in San Antonio will be issued on Tuesday with the details.

Clear Channel Communications was fined nearly a million dollars by the Federal Communications Commission because of remarks and actions on Bubba's show. Commissioners said the show was indecent. After that incident, the FCC warned Clear Channel it would consider taking away 98 Rock's radio license if there was any further instances of indecency. Bubba was also taken to court by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for the on-air butchering of a pig.
Radio is radio isn't it? If people don't like it, change the channel if you are offended. What happened to people listening to what they want to hear?

Am I missing something?

He knew the laws
He broke the laws

Its not a question of offensive.
If it was all about 'offensive' Stern would of been of the air years ago. (I can hope )

Thats were I have an issue. The "rules" are vague. Contemporary community standards differ from town to town, what might be appropriate on Bourbon St. would not go over well in Salt Lake City. So they pick and choose who to ride rough shot over.

These "rules" also oversee television as well. So you mean to tell me that someones words are more powerful than seeing a breast or rear-end on public broadcast television?

Quote:
FCC Rules: Obscene Broadcasts are Prohibited at all Times

Obscene speech is not protected by the First Amendment and cannot be broadcast at any time. To be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test:

-An average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;

-The material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and

-The material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.
I am not at issue with the show being a bit extreme, everyone has to have a hook to get an audience. If I hear something I do not necesarily agree with or find offensive; I change the channel.

It's not right, the audience for that show was #1 in many markets, which means that "real" people listened daily.

So next some social hermit will sue because they found their daughter watching South Park, then the FCC will count up all of the instances of profanity, slander and sexual situations ever used in the show.
The FCC will then levy fines against Viacom and South Park's producers which will spark concern amongst the politicians who will call for Senate hearings on the subject.

South Park will be reluctantly taken off Comedy Central due to political pressure and I will snap and start the next revolution!

grrrr!

The whole "change the channel argument" does not fly. The airwaves belong to the American Public. Between certain hours it is not permissible for indecent material to be on the public airwaves so that people do not unintentionally hear it (for example a radio playing in a coffee shop) or so that children do not have access to it. Bubba broke the indecency clause of the FCC regulations and I am glad they were fined heavily and eventually canned. You read these guys statements and tell me that it is not WAY OVER THE TOP. I hope similar actions follow.

Everyone one freaked when Elvis did his hip shaking thing on television in the late fifties/early sixties, but yet people chose to watch/listen to him.

So say I want to listen to a DJ in the morning talk about corrupt/worthless politicians and public servants...

Haven't my rights just been infringed upon? Where is my freedom of choice?

Yep that Bubba is a great guy.

What I wonder is why you are so entertained by this stuff.

That is my point. I don't listen to the guy. I choose not to. He is the #1 ranked morning show in the Tampa morning show market and I am listening to Boortz or Beck.

it will not stop with this is... that is my point
