or like the "parental warning" (or whatever they were) labels that we used to see on music etc....that label alone guaranteed another million sales!

It's called morbid curiousity, and is the same impulse as makes people follow ambulances and fire engines to see if you can see the horror crash site. 
It's part of our deep, dark desires to view the really horrific.  "OK, move along people, nothing to see here, move along... "
