Tipping the cable guy/gal
Is it recommended? I'm just wondering cause the Cableguy is supposed to come out today to install my internet today, and I think it's gonna require a lot of work cause the way my house doesn't have any cable outlets yet (it's an old house.....very old, and when the previous owneer renovated it he didn't install any cable outlets).
So? SHould I or should I not?

I vote no, he is getting paid to do a job already.
When the telephone guy had to fix a break in my yard last summer, I did offer a cold drink because it was screamin hot.
If he has to work in the attic, maybe offer to get him stuff to keep from going up and down a ladder and saving time.
Usually, they get a set amount of time to do a job and if you help them get done early that is like a tip.
I did some digging for the phone guy so he basically just had to connect the wires. He seemed to apprecieate it quite a bit.

When I also consider the 40 or so times they have had to come out since the first installation if I did I'd be broke.

IMO...no. Tipping originated from the Acronym T.I.P. (To Insure Promptness).
This has carried over into some low-wage businesses where the workers try to do outstanding jobs in spite of their wages...so, we got used to 'assisting' these public servers with a little extra when they really try hard to please whomever they are doing something for.
In the case of your Cable Company worker...he/she probably makes a very decent wage and doesn't really need a T.I.P.
But, in your opinion, he/she comes to your house, does an outstanding job..works diligently and pleasantly...gets you all fixed up and YOU!! will feel better by giving them a little extra..then by all means..do it.
Where I purchase my vehicle tires, included in the original cost of the tires is a deal where all flats etc. are 'on the house'. If I just need the tires checked and air added as needed during their lifetime..I just drive there and somebody will check them out and do whatever is needed. There is a very pleasant cripple guy that has been there since the day they opened their doors for business...when I drive up to the place, he knows what I am there for and drops what he is doing to check and air my tires for me. This guy makes a good living salary at the place...do I T.I.P. him??...you better bet your behind I do...every time!

It's not a cash tipping job. Personal service (table waiting, taxi, hair sytlist, or hotel services) are tip jobs. A refreshment is appropriate.
