Throw the problem out to everyone... P'raps they can shed some light on it. Even if they don't know that engine like the back of their hand.

Ok, Fist off I am mechanicly minded but this one has me stumped.
I was driving home the other night on the freeway and suddenly I noticed the oil pressure gauge slowly drop to 0, no pressure what so-ever. The engine died, all warning lights came on. I opened the hood and I could hear hissing and there was some smoke. I though I was out of oil. but on letting it cool down, I checked and I had plenty and it was clean. Once it cooled down I tried to start the engine and all was good, just some rattle in the top end (tappets), but after driving about 5 miles the same thing happened, Ooh 1 more thing, the temp did not climb high.

I thought that maybe the oil pump had died and then searched my mine to wonder if the pump was an internal one, but luckily its not. I then asked around and someone mentioned that maybe the pickup had come loose..

Does anyone have any ideas? This suv is only worth around $4500 so I don't want to spend a fortune.

Specs: 91 Mitsubishi Montero LS 4wd with over 100,000 on the clock.

Ok, found the prob. I went to try and move it tonight as tomorrow if streetclean day, thought I'd put some water in just in case it needs it, well I sat there for about 15mins trying to fill the radiator, then stop casue it seemed strange that it would take so much. Hoped in and cramked the engine. It just spun right over, no compression, and when I got out, there was water on one side of the car.
Guess I blew a head gasket or worse, cracked the block, either way it's not moving....

Well, at least now you know what is was. I don't know if you do your own mechanical work or not, but I know for a fact those heads are a pain. I had to change one out this spring. I still have nightmares from it.

Good Luck

Thanks Big blue77, I have replaced serveral no fuel injected engines and even a D-750 truck engine (back in the land downunder), but this time I have no room and no time to do it so I think I'll just get a cheap engine from a wrecker and get it put in and then sell this thing.

Thanks.
