Match speakers?

I've heard the make should match for stereo main and surround speakers. Just curious if people do this or not

I think it's mostly a marketing ploy/salesperson's pitch. You probably wouldn't want to have boomy bass-reflex speakers paired with acoustic suspensions, or suchlike. It depends on the characteristics of the makes and models in question.

I'm hoping to upgrade to HDTV soon, along with surround sound. I've been looking at (and listening to) Mirage speakers. Check out www.miragespeakers.com.

You need to match impedance, not make...

If we are talking home theater here (?), it IS important that the center channel be tonally matched to your front speaker pair. This generally means using speakers from the same manufacturer and product line. Rear channel ("surround") speakers are less critical but best performance is still obtained when these are voice-matched to the front speakers.

Check Polk Audio's site for discussion.

Note that voice matching is especially critical for DVD-A and SACD surround music.

Impedance is a non-issue as long as your amplifiers are compatible.

I did only because I liked the way they sounded and there was no reason not to. But I doubt it will make a big difference unless your going audiophile pro.
