they based the cost of the fine on your income?

How does that seem fair to the overal population? next thing you know they propably target the fancy car's figuring they make alot of money.

actually, i find that very fair. it levels the playing field and lets the rich people know that they can't run the show just because they have a lot of money. i love it!

Levels the playing field? How do you figure that? I would think that it would leave the rich people in a far too big of a target to increase the rolls of the city, county, state (not sure how it is in finland) Meaning that officiers would tend to target the rich and leave more alone of the poorer class.

I see your point however I don't see the logic of that kind of system.

Racing??? At 47 MPH??? The cops around here would be ticketing you for holding up traffic!

Oh, I think that the rich should pay a bigger fine alright. Otherwise, it's no punishment at all.

But, unless this guy is a serious habitual offender, $103,600 fine for going 47 MPH is absurd. If he is a habitual offender, then his license should be revoked.

I had a foriegn exchange student at my high school from finland. He said it cost around 2000 american dollars to even get a license. He told me that because it only takes 1 DUI to loose your license.. his point was; You have to pay so much to get your license, you're automatically a carefull driver. Maybe explains why they don't have many accidents over there.

I wonder if there is much driving without a license in Finland. I know many people who have driven without a license here in the States. I agree that the incentive would be to cite the rich as they have demonstrated an ability to pay, whereas the lower income and the poor could probably drive a 1973 Citroen twice as fast and drive away with a warning. That is profiling of the rich. If you accept any kind of profiling, you have to accept all kinds or risk being a hypocrite. How can you reconcile the belief that a fine based on the ability to pay is somehow fairer than a punishment to fit the crime? If it costs $2K to get a license, my guess is that either every driver in Finland can afford this type of 'Justice' or there are many drivers without a license.

The finnish people are a bunch of drunks

95% of their crime is alcohol related
and it´s estimated that atleast 25% of the population has serious drinking problems

thats why they are wery hard on enforcing their traffic laws
