Factory refurbished HP laptops

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has any information on factory refurbishe HP/Compaq laptops. I am in the market for a new laptop, and I am not too familiar with all the goods and the bads of all the brands. I was looking at just buying a new Vaio laptop, but I was also looking at HP's too. I have seen alot of HP's that were factory reconditioned, and are up to 1000.00 cheaper, but the warranty is only 3 months, and I do not want to get screwed out of 1000.00. Has anyone had any exposure to the HP's, and are they reliable, trustworthy, all around good notebooks? If i can save by not getting a brand new HP or sony that would be cool, but I wish it was easy as it is when you build your own.

Thanks for any input!

hp makes decent enough laptops...in fact a couple of years ago they garnered some of the very good reviews, particlarly for their excellent battery life.

the problem w/your situation is that your laptop will only have 3 months warranty. if you're spending a good chunk of change ($1000) on a laptop you need at least 1 yr warranty on it. aside from the hd & memory, many of the other components on most laptop cannot be easily replaced by the end-user.

if your budget is $1000, you can find new laptops, hp or other brands for that price. make sure you get betw 1-3 yr warranty.

Go for a Compaq laptop, IMHO. I've sold both Compaq and HP and the Compaqs are built better and seem to be more reliable. And, I've owned a 1200Z Compaq laptop for the past two years and have been very pleased with it.

Refurbished HP's

Jenmal, I can't speak about their laptops but I have bought two HP refurbished desktops from CompUSA Auctions, who seem to be the authorized reseller for HP, and have no problems what so ever except with FEDEX who seems to like leaving things at the post office and not telling me.
