Is this comp fast enough ?

Im looking for a comp bacically to encode and burn backups of dvds n vcd and maybe play a few games here and there. Do you think this is a good 2nd computer to buy? My first one is out of date n slow. How much should this setup be around? Thanks for the help.

Cpu- Intel pentium 4 cpu 1.80GHz, 400fsb
Cache - L2 cache 512Kbytes
Mobo - ECS model M935LU
Chipset SiS, 650
Bios- ver.07.00T date 04/02/01
AGP revision 2.0
Memory- 544MB SDRAM
60g hard drive
Dvd-rom
phillips 24x cdrw drive
floppy
ATI tv tuner card
ATX case
300w ps

no graphic or sound just the tower.

Ok..i just did some searching on my mobo and found out it supports both Sdram and ddr ram. Now if i change it to ddr ram how much of a diffrence will it be in performace? Heres a link to the Mobo im using and what type of ddr ram should i be using?

I personally don't think that it's fast enough... I'm quite spoil when it comes to speed...

I myself do a lot of video editing and rendering; encoding. I'm running at 2.5 and 3.0 pentium right now, and it's still lags on me.. Try getting a 2.5+ with RAID, maybe that should help you encode your dvds better... Otherwise, you will wait hours for the damn thing to finish...

Thats plenty fast enough. I have a old 1.8 and it flys through anything I throw at it Sure, it isnt a supercomputer, but its fast enough

Also, if you can wait a month, intel is releasing their next generation, line of CPU'S and the 3.2 and below are gonna drop substantially in price Even tho, the 1.8 is cheap as it is already

Besides the processor, Memory and the HD play an important role in DVD burning. The PIV 1.8 should work well if paired with DDR RAM and a decent HD (I'm assuming that the RAM is not DDR).

So, IMHO I think the system above looks good, except I would concentrate on improving the memory and HD by using DDR RAM and making sure the HD is one of the newer 8 meg cache models. They are not too expensive now. Of course, if the MB doesn't support DDR RAM, then you would have to change that too.

And Overclocked412 gave some sound advice about waiting until February if possible. Intel is expected to do some nice price drops.

Gameing performance will depend on the vid card mostly. As ppl have said get DDR and as much as you can. if you cant push the 32 mb ram stick to the max speed of the 512 stick leave it out, Im assuming you have two sticks 32 + 512.

Mainly a 3200+?
