PlZ come in and give your opinion, thx
ok, here is the story, a friend of mine is planning to buy a laptop. she is thinking about the following three systems.
(please read the rest of the post before looking at the laptops, thanks)
**1020** http://www.jandr.com/JRProductPage.p...ageTab=Details
**1030** http://www.jandr.com/JRProductPage.p...ageTab=Details
**1040** http://www.jandr.com/JRProductPage.p...ageTab=Details
ppl, I know all of them are expensive and i know you will say something like " you can get an better spec one with cheaper price somewhere else... etc " ...yeh, i know this, ppl, but this is not the point of this post. The discussion will ONLY based on these THREE laptops. Please give some professional opinions of which one is worth of buying and why. Thanks a lot for reading this bs and for your time.
My friend will use the laptop for school works mostly, sometimes light-gaming (==> Neopet...), sometimes watchs movies too. Again, most of the time will be on school work. However, my friend wants to buy a laptop that will be good for the next few years and doesn't want to get another one shortly.
Actually, the major differents for these three units only on Hard-drive, RAM, Processor speed, and price.
OK, that's it.. please leave your valuable opinions on why do you think that one is a better choice out of these three units. THANKS.
*** edit: she is thinking about buying it from jandr only because she will get a 30% discount from jandr.

i don't think any of them are worth buying. seriously too. first of all compaq has gone down the toilet these last few years and i would highly recommend NOT buying anything from them. go check out dell instead. besides all of those models are quite pricey IMO as you mentioned.
also is this person going to be using this comp on the go alot? in otherwords is battery life of paramount importance? if not then there is no reason to go with a Pentium M processor because they are much much slower than normal pentium 4 processors that go for cheaper, they just save battery life is all. The average pentium 4 in laptops is around 2.5 gHz, as opposed to the 1.5 gHz procs you're seeing here. if you want longevity go with the p4 instead of the p-M. Also, is this person set on a dvd burner? if not that is another area to save on (as your second link indicates). also 512mb of ram is plenty and won't become obselete before the rest of the system does. same thing with hard drive space, does this person actually need 80gb of hard drive space.
i guess what i'm getting at is, what will this person be using the laptop for (in a mobility sense where there are no power connections)?
if it's just for schoolwork and light gaming then i would have to say that the second option (the cheap one) is best suited to his needs. but even still i think it's overkill and you could get a cheaper, better model from dell
EDIT: RED FLAG RED FLAG!!!! do not buy from J&R! they have one of the worst ratings i've ever seen at resellerratings, a 5.4!!! http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1649.html they are even worse than the "low average"

Concider one thing I noticed in the specs. All three apear to be about the same. Two have 80gb hdd and the cheeper one has a 40gb hdd. $400.00 for 30gb. EEEEEWWWWW.

hi, originel, thanks a lot for your opinion, I agree with you. I also recommended the cheapest one out of these 3, which is the 2nd one to her. Just like what Uncle Bob said, spending $400 for 40GB is NOT a smart move. What else, she doesn't need 80GB at all, 40GB is kind more than enough already.
She is thinking about buying it from jandr only because she will get a 30% discount for any laptop purchase from it.
Thanks again, guys.

Given the choices, I'd have to agree-go with the cheapest of the three(IMO you're getting hosed on any of the three).
A few things to consider CNeon:
Even with the 30% discount, she'll still be overpaying (I STRONGLY agree with Originel about checking out DELL-much more bang for your buck);
Even a 60% discount isn't a good deal if you have problems that J&R won't remedy (those reseller ratings are EXTREMELY low-and there is a reason for that);
If there are any problems with this deal or with the laptop, it's YOUR reputation that will take the hit (at least in the eyes of your friend). To CYOA, you'll need to be PERFECTLY clear with her that J&R's ratings are VERY low, and that she could get a better deal elsewhere.
Just my 2 cents. Best of luck with whatever decision you make |

Check out Fujitsu Notebooks.
I have one and it's been a good buy as far as I am concerned.

here is a , linky for the lazy , to dell outlet for refurbished laptops
click on the notebook section , linky for the lazy , on the right side up towards the top .
then click on the link on the left for up to 425 off inspiron notebooks , linky for the lazy , on the left in orange text
then click on view inventory on the left in blue text , linky for the lazy
you should find a very nice lappy there for alot less thay you linked in your first post CNeon here is a pretty nice one for about 1k in price i found messing with the drop down boxes on this page
you can always get a lappy for about 700$ after rebate all over the place at places like bestbuy , compusa , staples , officemax/depot so you might want to look there also . you will have to do rebates to get that price but it is cheaper in the long run .
hope this helps
ya ya and what bill said the fujitsu's are really nice also .

| ok now it makes sense. well here is what i would recommend you do. first of all, find a dell notebook that is around $1000 from dell (like these p4 2.4 gHz-2.8gHz) notice how the processor is a full 1 gHz+ faster than the notebooks she is looking at? that is exactly the same price she will pay at J&R. also point that out and then also mention how incredibly terribly J&R is. like this: there is a 50/50 chance that she will have a problem, and if there is a problem she is out $1000. they are that bad. make SURE to mention how bad J&R is, that is absolutely vital!

the cheapest one looks the best deal to me. Its already "overkill" for most users.
One of the expensive ones has 1g or ram and 80g and dvd burner.....ahh, not for me, thats overkill for a laptop...I mean, are you REALLY gonna need to burn that dvd copy sitting in class? Well maybe, but not for me, lol.
They look very similar except for a few differences.
