OK that makes sense. I don't have a floppy on this machine either, so it doesn't matter. I do know that for the Win XP or most restoration disks you need to have the cd-rom bootable and the HD in master. It seems impossible to do that with the e-pc.

Apparantly, HP has made it so you have to buy a proprietar kit that goes with these machines to use a slim drive. It has a little adapter that fits onto the appropriate slimdrive. So if I bought just the drive from 3rd party, it probably wouldn't work.

UGHHHH.

Have you checked in the bios to see if you can change the boot order so that the CD will boot first?

Yes, but I'm pretty sure that it looks for the cd-rom from the secondary ide cable (the notebook size ide)...

I can get it to boot from the cd-rom if it is ponied with the hard drive and set as the master.

Anyone know where I can get refurbished CD-rom drive for the e-pc 40 for cheap?
