WINXP vs 98SE

I am using WIN 98SE it is stable, no problems. XP is touted as 'better" but I understand that you can not be switching motherboards, hard drives, cpus as XP won't let you reload the OS. True or False. I need interchangeability as in the past. IF I buy an OS, I want to do with it whatever as long as it stays in one pc however I change that pc.

I am one of the last holdouts on W98se...mainly because I have worked on it a lot and halfway understand it.

That being said..I think XP is way better.

Just more stable and modern....NTFS is way better than fat32...ntfs allows compression, actual security etc.

I hear you on the whole switching motherboard thing etc.....with W98se you could usually just delete the hklm/enum folder fromthe registry and let it re-detect the hardware and it'd work (not always)

With XP they recommend to reinstall with a board change. Some people have just ran a "repair" installation and had it come out ok after changing boards.

XP has the whole "recovery console" thing going for it where you boot off of the cd and of course the "system restore" (like ME has)

The system resore saved my rear end in a BIG way once....on a job site this I had to write out STEP BY STEP instructions for this lady to do quickbooks backups and other backups....well somehow she got it messed up. So i showed up..mr supertech..big S on my chest...and I proceeded to wipe out her backup....lol. It was all over...a month or so of personal financial bank records gone...bye bye..siyanora...no way back.

Except for system restore, lol. I didnt think it would even work but it did in fact bring back the financial records. If it were w98se Id have been dead.

When it comes down to it, there is no real reason to stay on W98se anymore. (even though I do, on some of my comps, lol)

Oh great!

Looks like you're going to have to copy/paste all that over to the other thread JP . . . or we could ask Whir (The Thread Merging Mod) to do it for you.

Not to turn this into a VB Board Sucks The Penguin thread, but your kinda wrong on the post count thingie. I've noticed that there is a bug, or what appears to be a bug, that sometimes when you post it doesn't add another digit to your count. It's annoying, because size matters = more posts equal more girls.

That's where i've been getting it wrong ArcticFox. Oh, and yeah, definitely make the switch to XP if your hardware is new enough to run it with ease. Otherwise I'd just hold on to your 98se box and get something newer with XP already on it. I would recommend staying away from XP Home and just get the Pro. Home is a waste.

Lookout JP-looks like another post going to the viagra/hard drive level (but, hey, the chicks dig it, huh? )
Volunteer: XP is quite an improvement on 98 (IMHO). Better initial driver database, and generally better performance and stability. And, as JP way saying-System restore is a great thing, not to mention the remote assistance feature. If you're not sure whether or not you want to upgrade, you can always run dual O/S's until you decide which one you like better-chances are, you'll be booting to XP more than '98.
As far as problems switching motherboards-you'll have to contact MS to reactivate windows after too many system hardware changes(which irritates me to no end-but a necessary evil-kinda like Rick ), but it doesn't take very long to do.

My apologies for the double post, my pc just sat there and it looked like it hadn't gone through, had to reconnect, dial up is a pain.
