WIN98SE vs XP

I keep reading reports that XP is much more stable, more versatile, etc. etc. However since I am constantly changing components, HD's, MBD's and I have no intention of buying a new OS each time, should I stick with WIN98se. 98 has been stable, no problems ever. would I really gain much IF I could switch to XP and still maintain my demand for interchangeability on anything or everything? Would switching to 2000 be an upgrade?

You can still change out your hardware and such w/ XP, you just might have to call them everyonce in awhile for product activation. You don't have to do it everytime you change a component, just if you change quite a few at once.

98SE is outta here come Jan 15th. No more Windows Updates, no more support period.

2K would be an upgrade from 98SE by any means.

Here's how I see it . . .

98SE/Me/XP Home - Home users
2KPro/XPPro - Business users

hehe...seeing double.

I wouldnt recommend Win2k for home use....if you're going to do that just go to XP.

You dont have to BUY a new OS to change hardware, lol. I think you can change like 10 things or so before you need to reactivate it..which is just a phone call...(i think a nic though counts for 3 or 4 things)

Ok, first - what do you use your computer for? If you play games, then just say no to 2000.

Next - what are your computer's specs? If they arn't to a certain level don't bother running XP, as it will only make your life hell.

3rd - XP is much more stable than 98se, and has more features. But it's also really bloated, much more than even 2000. It can be a good OS for some, and a crappy OS for others. Do you play with networks? Then I would suggest upgrading to XP.

But the main thing is - if it works, why change it? Do you find something missing from your computing experience, like a really horrible implementation of PCAnywhere built into the OS? If it works fine, there really is no need to upgrade. My experience with 98se has been crash-filled and, well, crash-filled. But that's because I was using 2 eMachines', so ignore that part.

I say evaluate your needs and your computer, then go from there.

Win98Se-Updates

As the updates for Win98SE will no longer be available as of Jan. 16\04 where does that leave someone using it? I use XP but my neighbor has Win98SE. She does email and very simple games, has only a 5G HD and 64MB of RAM, older machine inherited from her son.
It will do all she needs right now. Her OS needs reinstalling, not working well. Where is she on the updates?

Well she just can't get them. As far as I know M$ will not let you download updates for 98, no matter how well it works for you. It's an evil marketing ploy to get you to buy XP.

I heard that microsoft extended this for another few years...seems like there were too many business using 98 that still don't feel the need to upgrade...

Windows 98Se Updates

Thank you for all the replies. This is good news and I believe a smart move on Microsoft's part.
Re my neighbor I will format her hard drive and reinstall Win98SE and her programs and she will be happy.
