XP is NOT more stable than Win98SE, as any tech or help desk technician can tell you. XP has a lot of quirks and bugs, some of which even mystify MS. It will be another few years before XP reaches the level of Win98 as far as bug fixes and stability is concerned. However, for non-techs and newer computer users, XP is the way to go, it is a lot harder for the user to damage the OS by fiddling with it, compared to Win98. Also, XP has a huge hardware driver library built-in, and the security features are really nice, particularly with XP Pro. I still run Win98SE on my "work" computer, and intend to do so for a long time to come, its just plain faster and easier to configure. I have XP installed on the "oh geeze, another XP problem report" computer, which I use only to try to duplicate problems users are having. No reason to upgrade to XP if a system has a good Win98 installation, IMO.

Correct. Win 98 is so much okay compare to XP which is a little sophisticated. As long as one of these machine does the same job and that would be equal.

I have been using Win 98 for approx. 5 years and Win XP, 4 years. Nothing much different entirely though except for that lovely Win XP interface. Nice

...XP is 4.... seriously? I thought it was only like 2.... Cause I remember it being in beta in my junior year of highschool cause my electronics teacher was part of the MSDN and had the beta running on a few of class computers... I've graduated in 2002.... Cuase I remember my senior year a friend of mine DLed the corprate version for me.. (which later got destroyed by a rouge CD rom drive...)

Any ways, on the same system (decent 1Ghz CPU 512MB RAM ect..) XP will out preform 98SE from my experiance dual booting that set up. But 2000 is simply my favorite windows version.

Yeah I love 2000 because it's simple, efficient, and doesn't get in your way a la XP.

I still think a lot of it comes down to what your using the computer for. I.e. is it going to be a stand-a-lone or if it's going to be networked what are the other computers in the network running. I think this is true whether your at home or in a work atmosphere because even though people have had success I've heard of a lot of problems networking Win 98SE and XP together. Just my $.02

I'm still using win98se cause it's such a good os for me. I only use my system for games, music/video, and net. Another advantage is great performance with an xp1700 and pc133s.

My Hands Up!

Win98 is the one for me.
Been using it since well alittle after 1998.
noprob-lems here, tho XP has nice i candy to view & I've heard a kick ars cd rw / dvd burner software installed.
The few times i have ventured on an XP O/S seemed very familar to me,tho much more digging to get at what I desired to re-configure.
i also use 98Lite Preview to install win98

Win98SE versus XP

I am using Win XP Home Edition and like it. The burner part of it works well for me. I have Nero and likem it. Still have ECDC Creator 5 but the update system is crazy, just too much trouble so don't use Roxio any more. Got the Nero with my burner.
