Kids Digital Camera Suggestions

hey gang.

I've been searching around a bit for a digital camera to replace my ever busted logitech one on the counter. Im looking to spend as much as 250 dollars on one, but there are so many out there, id like to know what you guys have been having good/bad luck with.

Im looking for at least a 3 megapixel camera with at least a 2x optical zoom, and 4x digital zoom. I don't care what media it takes, just as long as it can take some darn good photos! Video capability not a necessity, just a plus. Im looking to use it for occasional pictures of friends, family, places, but more for textures for 3D modeling..

Let me know if you find a good deal at a website or store, post the link if you can, much appreciated!

hmm, can you give us a few more details of what you're looking for? a teeny camera, big zoom, etc.

if you haven't been there yet, head over to www.imaging-resource.com on the left column there's a Dave's picks section which is quite helpful if you don't have time to search through all his extensive reviews!

the fuji a210 looks real nice for its pricetag.

refviews are available at the above website. Also when looking for the lowest prices on digicams I always check www.buydig.com first. They're not always the absolute cheapest, but they're close if they aren't and they are a very good company to buy from. (fyi, they have free shipping at least one week of every month if not more often)

I think it was spoofee that showed this Fuji A205 from Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

total cost was $132 incl S+H and incl free 64MB flash card
deal good till Dec 31st

this is a 2MP/3x optical that uses 2 AA batteries
( go buy a 10 pack of NiMH for $10 !)

My $0.02:
forget the "digital zoom" ....it is a farse
unless you want to spend $700+ for 5MP/8x opt zoom,
anything more than this is a waste of $, size, weight
if all you want is to get 4x6 prints from Walmart for $0.20
or send pics in emails, the above is ideal
you won't need more than 64MB mem card
If you are a serious 35mm SLR type, then forget the above and get a real digital camera ie if you want 13x19 prints for the wall,
a 5MP is required and 8x zoom, 512MB mem card

Here's a great review link for many types.

I was looking for a good 3.1 MP recently and after tons of research I ended up getting a Kodak DX 6340 (yeh, I know Kodak? & quality camera? But it is!). It takes great quality Pics. The only real complaint I have read about (and noticed on mine) is that there is a bit of a delay from when you press the shutter button and when it actually takes the pic. However it varies under conditions – sometimes it’s fast and other times a bit slow. Also, if you turn of red eye reduction, it helps a lot to. But basically, in all the reviews I've read on the DX series from Kodak, hardly anyone has any real complaints.

I got mine from Computergeeks.com as a refurb. It came just like a new model -- just in a brown box (Direct from Kodak, not repacked at the reseller). It came with all the extras as a new one and has the same warranty (1 year) It was $229.99 minus geek coupon of $30, so about $207.00 shipped. I love the pic quality. It is very simple to use, but also has some nice advanced features that are also simple to make use of.

I have the coupon code if you want it: GEEK6340

As of 12/01/2003 at 6Am Central time, still in stock.

IMHO it would be hard to find a better camera for the money. The lens is great & the LCD is big and very easy to read even in bright light.

Has a 4X OPTICAL zoom, excellent quality Schneider Variogon lens, and a flash that has up top a 20' range. Plus, great Macro function. Takes MMC & SD memory and can use a variety of AA batt power sources (rechargeable & CRV3 work best). I suggest using SD cards at 256MB or higher (such as Simpletech. they have very fast data transfer rates Vs the 128 MB cards).

Just stay away from the CX series by Kodak -- lots of problems. The DX series no problems.

I have always had good luck with buying "seasoned" merchandise, saving a buck or two over the leading edge stuff.

I bought the wife an Olympus D-520 Zoom about a year ago for $300 plus, and have excellent results with it. It is a 2.o mp, and uses plain ol smart media cards. It is currently in the $150 - $200 range.

It has many features, including taking Qucik Time movies, (flash disabled), to the capacity of the card. I currently us a 128 mb memory card, and it will hold 300 pics, or about 60 seconds of video.

Dl is a snap, just pull the card out, put it in a USP "thumb" card reader, and transfer to the My Pictures folder. You can of course use the software and usb cable, but the card swap is just easier.

I think it would fit your needs nicely.

Just started playing with the video features, PM me if you are interested in looking at a 3MB amateur video, NO PORN, lol.
