Cable Modem Chioces

Best Buy sent my neighbor a 10% off coupon in the mail and he wants to pick-up a cable modem.
He's borrowing my back-up Linksys BEFCMU10 ver.2 now and was thinking of picking up the same at BB.
The cable guy recommended the Motorola and said the Linksys I provided for the neighbors hook-up 2 weeks back was "OK" but then again they tried to sell him the Motorola for $159.00 (ah, NO)
BB carries several differnt cable modem manufactures at the same price ($79.99) and I was wondering if the Linksys is still a good choice.

Thanks
WB

I bought a used Toshiba from anandtech and its doing fine.

One thing you might do is call the isp and see if they have any recommendations....call tech support for the isp....and also they may have some certain modems listed on their website. The toshiba was listed on my isp's site so I went with it.

I have a Toshiba PCX2200 and it's treated me really well though I've heard others complain about this modem giving them troubles. I got it free when I signed up for internet service here and that's the only reason I have it. Guess that's not the best recommendation but it is relevant..

Thanks for the replies.
I have not been able to find any real pro's or con's either way other then the Motorola having the 'stand by' button.
Then again the Linksys sits nicely on top of my matching BEFSR41 router.

I have the Surfboard 4100 and have never had any problems with it. At times though I could swear that the old 56k modem was faster but i've always blamed the speed dip on Comcast. Never had the speed problem with @home or attbi. Know you have me wondering if it's the modem as it is better then 2 years old.
I have never tried the Linksys on my line here, attbi wanted a $10.00 S/C for changing the mac address in there system.
From what i've been told you can chage your mac address on line with Comcast for N/C but i've never been able to find the page where it could be done.

BTW, Out had posted and I had read that Comcast was going to raise the DL speed from 1.5 to 3.0 mbps at no charge. According to the tech I spoke with they are raising the speed but at an additional cost.
Can any Comcast users comment on this?
