Outdoors rebate blues

I've noticed a trend lately to allow less and less time to apply for rebates. It used to be 30-45 days from purchase date. Some items I bought last week had to be postmarked within 7 days of purchase day! If they keep up this trend, we'll have to start mailing off the rebate stuff as soon as we walk out of the store! They're trying really hard to avoid paying out as many rebates as possible. One thing I've started doing is not open the item until I get my rebate. I very carefully just cut out the upc symbol & I make copies of everything. If I get a rebate rejection that can't be resolved (including not enough time to send off for the rebate), I return the item for refund (take your papers with you) and explain that I would not have purchased the item except for the rebate. And yes, some of the stores are notorious for leaving up rebate signs that the rebate period has expired on, as well as hiding the rebated items until after the rebate period - they pull them out if you ask for them, but don't have the items readily available.
