Along those lines ... I am thinking of buying a new PC, and maybe using this one as a file server or something ... who do you guys recommend at this point? Or should I just buy a Dell ... |
Replacing the mainboard will cost ~ 300+ and your local computer service tech can do it if you want(that's ~ 50% of the 300+). You CAN do it yourself and get a ten times better board for the same money ... it is not that hard but is time consuming.
However, considering your income and probable needs, I would suggest a '' workstation '' ( even from Dell ) at ~5 grand which comes with a
real 1 / 3-year warranty.
I worked at 60+ hour weeks(engineering) and can relate. If building the system will help relieve the stress, it could be a good project for you but you will have to decide if it will relieve stress or cause it ... depends on your personality.

For anyone interested I was bitten by MCS last year and also am still dealing with the shoddy parts problems. One item out of all of them turned-out to be ok. ... I got lucky and eventually(3 months) got part of my money back. NO WAY I would attempt business with them again. However, if they file Chapter 7, I'll get in line if I can.
