Power Supply

Any suggestions as to what to get to replace my power supply? I have a Dual AMD Athlon MP system (Tyan Tiger MPX board). The ps I have currently is 470w. (i'm hoping the ps is indeed the culprit as to why my pc won't even power on. It just up and died the other day for no apparant reason.)

Thanks

Hmm, you should try to test the PSU with another motherboard, or manually start it up.
I can't find the page on how to do that. Maybe someone here can help??

Actually, go here http://xtronics.com/reference/atx_pinout.htm
And the connector that says:PS-ON, all you need to do is connect that to the ground, or touch your PSU chassis with it and it should power on.

I did try testing it with another mobo. The ps would start up as soon as I plugged the power cable in (ie the on/off switch did not work.) Plus there would be no video signal to the monitor. This all started to happen around the time the power went out in the house. AMybe that fried the ps, even though it is plugged into a good surge strip.

I am planning to test the power supply with a multimeter.

You did of course try plugging it in withoiut the surge protector right?
(I know its a dumb question but a possible oversight).

Yes, you can't over look the power strip. It's one of the :embarassed: options...

As for a replacement, I currently have an Enermax 431W power supply that's extremely stable and quiet while running an athlon, Radeon 9700 Pro (temporarily), 4 IDE devices (3 7200 RPM harddrives, 1 CD), and 6 case fans. It's $90 new, but I've never had a problem with it.

edit- just realized it sounds like I'm selling my PS...that's not the case, I'm only suggesting using what I have...sorry if any confusion.

Tried it without the surge strip, no dice. It did randomly start up once on its own, but froze at the hardware detect screen.

IF I understand things right, you can test the ps with a multimeter by placing one lead on the ground wire and the other to the chasis of the pc?

I was looking at the Enermax ps at Newegg. THey have some that might fit the bill for me.

I just tried to jump the ps by using a wire to go from the ps-on wire to ground. It started up, so I doubt it is the ps now. Next guess, motherboard...??
