FRAUD WARNING from Best Buy!

Received the following Email from Best Buy, that I would like to share. In all events DO NOT give out personal information, to an identity thief.

IMPORTANT: E-MAIL HOAX NOTIFICATION

Late Wednesday afternoon, June 18, 2003, Best Buy became aware of an unauthorized and deceptive e-mail to consumers titled "Fraud Alert." That e-mail message, which requested personal information (i.e., social security and credit card numbers), claimed to come from the BestBuy.com Fraud Department. That message was NOT from Best Buy or any of our affiliates.

Best Buy is working with the appropriate law enforcement authorities to quickly resolve the situation. We are working to shut down sites affiliated with that unauthorized e-mail and Best Buy will work with law enforcement authorities to prosecute any perpetrators involved in this illegal act to the fullest extent of the law. If you replied to the fraudulent
e-mail in any way, contact your bank and/or credit card companies immediately.

No Best Buy systems have been compromised, and our online business is secure. The privacy of your personal information is of the utmost importance to Best Buy and any information you provide to us is handled according to our Privacy Policy.

As part of the preparation for the relaunch of BestBuy.com, online purchasing will be temporarily unavailable beginning Friday, June 20; however, our product information and helpful resource articles will still be available. Rest assured, the fraudulent e-mail will not affect the launch of our redesigned Web site.

If you have any questions, call Customer Care at 1-888-BEST BUY (237-8289) or visit our Online Pressroom.

To find out more about protecting your information, visit the Federal Trade Commission's Identity Theft Web site at www.consumer.gov/idtheft.

Thank you for being a valued Best Buy customer.

...someone knocks on your door...you answer...you dont have any idea who they are...they ask you for your name and social security number and other personal info...ARE YOU ACTUALLY GOING TO GIVE IT TO THEM??? people who fall for this type of idiocy are proof that we should allow Darwinism to proceed along its natural course...andd the fact that there are people out there who might fall for this shows what happens when we stop weeding out the weaker genes...

what ever happened to the idea that the kid who ate too many marbles as a child doesnt grow up to have children of their own?

Since when did we start requiring that people take responsibility for their idiocy? If some idiot gives away his entire life savings because of this scam, they'll find a way to blame Best Buy. Or rather, they'll find a lawyer who can prove in court that it was Best Buy's fault.

some people believe everything that they read online is the truth. and sadly many fall for it. Calling them idiots is not really the proper word, more like misinformed

Misinformed?!?! In what way were they misinformed? They were scammed and i think everyone would agree that believing everything in your email or what you read on a website is just plain ludicrous! These are gullible people who are actually being done a service by this scam : Next time, i bet they will think twice about giving out their personal info that they shouldn't give to a stranger at the door as much as they shouldnt give it out to websites and emails without properly looking into it.

and on that note...if you believe what you read on-line all the time : Ive got these great shares of Martha Stewart Inc that ill sell you at a real deal!!
