The same thing happened to me at OfficeMax last week. They advertised a WD 120gb HDD and didn’t have any. I was there when the store opened. They didn’t even have one. The store manager said he would call me when the drives came in. Guess what. I’m still waiting. I will never buy a thing from OfficeMax again. I don’t care if they are giving it away, I will never go there again.

Yes, it should be illegal.

I thought it was illegal to offer a deal, then say it's not available for any reason once someone starts looking to buy...if it's not, my economics class last year was a complete waste of time...

It is illegal if they are doing Bait and Switch. That is, attempting at baiting you to come to their store or website with a low price and then attempting to switch you to a higher price when the lower priced item is not made. "available"

A letter to said companys...... refering to "bait and switch" will probably get you your desired result.......

They don't want to get into any local legal troubles (that costs way to much) and they usually don't want a bad reputation. Regardless of what the local manager says.... the guys at the top usually respond to written (snail mail) letters.

You might be suprised at how the companies might respond. I've mailed many a letter..... and been very suprised at the results I've had.

On a side note, I believe you should mail at least as many "praise" letters as "complaint" letters to companies. Keeps me from feeling like I just complain all the time. That and people/companies many times don't get the praise they deserve.

Good point. I received outstanding service from a furniture rental company in Houston once. They sent out a survey asking about their service and I raved about the service person who helped me. She was unbelievably helpful and accomodating. The company VP promoted her to manager the next week.
