Fed Ex is #1
The absolute worst is definitely the Post Office (USPS). They take the longest, lose the most packages, almost never leave a package at your door or with a neighbor (and good luck trying to go pick it up at the post office), and I've had several packages that arrived and you could clearly tell that someone had opened them and gone through them, some of which had things missing. I find UPS to be not much better. They usually take longer to deliver than Fed Ex, and I'd say about a third of my packages come beat-up (ripped open, crushed, mangled, etc.). UPS rarely leaves a package with a neighbor or at my front door (even though I tell the driver it's ok every time I see him). Here's the thing that bothers me the most about UPS. About a year ago, I had a package coming and they tried to deliver it during the day, while I was at work. The note they left said that they would try to deliver it the next day around the same time. I called them and told them I wouldn't be home and try to come later. The next day I got home and there was another note saying they missed me, NO CRAP! They came early again. This was a Friday. So now I have to wait untill Monday to get my package? No way! So I call them up again and ask if I can pick it up. They said sure, gave me the address and said it would be there waiting. This is like 4pm and they close at 5pm. It turns out the place is on the other side of town, and you can immagine what the traffic is like in South Florida around 4-5pm! So I get there about 5 min. before they close, I wait in line for about 20 minutes, and when they look up my tracking # they tell me the package is still on the truck and they don't get back until 7pm. I was FUMING! First of all, who told me on the phone that the package was here?! Second, if the trucks are out until 7pm, and I called to have the package delivered after I got off work (I get home around 4pm) why did the note say that they came at 1pm?!! So, needless to say, I had to wait untill Monday to get my package. And I could've had it on Thursday. So, for the past year or so, I've tried to use UPS as little as possible. Unfortunately, lots of companies only use UPS. So, guess what happened a couple weeks ago. I had a package coming from UPS, and was watching the tracking info on-line. I'm checking it out one day, and it says "undeliverable - wrong address". So, I call them up and they say that it never went on the truck because it had the wrong address, bet they have the right address now and it'll go out tomorrow. I said if it never went on the truck, then it's still in the warehouse, right? She said yes. I said if it's there then I'll come pick it up. She said no problem. I said you're absolutely sure it's there right? Because I don't want to drive all the way across town for nothing. She says oh yes it's definitely there. So, stupid me drives all the way across town through crappy South Florida traffic. I get there and after waiting in line for 20 minutes again, the girl behind the counter looks at the computer and says, No sir that package is on the truck. I can't even begin to tell you the rage I was feeling at that moment! It's a good thing I wasn't carrying my handgun that day! I told her about the phone call, and she checked in the back, but no package! So, I went home empty handed. The next day, when I got the package, I examined the outside for the address correction, and there was only ONE address on the package. My correct address. I don't know what the heck they were talking about. So that's why I say that UPS SUCKS!!! Fed Ex I've used many times, and yes, occasionally you have a package that takes a little longer to get there. And occasionally you need to go pick up the package because they missed you. I've gone to pick up packages about 6 times, and EVERY time, the package was there waiting. And the Fed Ex office is open until 7pm I think, and they say your package will be there after 5pm, and it always has been. I've never gotten a package from Fed Ex that was damaged, open, or missing parts. One more thing, that has never happened with UPS. Twice in the past few months, I ordered something using Fed Ex, and they actually delivered it on a Saturday. I didn't pay for Saturday delivery. It's just something that Fed Ex does sometimes! I've NEVER seen UPS do that! From now on I try to make it a point to use only Fed Ex.

Here, IMHO, is one reason that UPS sucks so bad. They are union and FedEx is not.
And I have never had a problem with about 20 FedEx deliveries but have had problems with 1/3 of 15 UPS deliveries.

It depends what I am doing.. If I am sending something out then UPS, and the USPS are the un-reliable ones.
I have had USPS priority mail take two weeks to be delivered before.
Normally Fedex is the best for delivering stuff to my house. USPS always makes me wait in a line at the post office that is normally over a half hour long.
That's NEVER a pleasant thing to do. |

I've been ordering a ton of parts lately and selling a fair amount on ebay, so I feel somewhat qualified to comment:
UPS-
I use to work for them, and I wish them well. However, they do smash the heck out of my boxes. They're also more expensive than fedex ground. So I avoid them as much as possible. I come home from work and see a pile of boxes from multiple orders in the foyer and I can tell which ones came through UPS by the condition they are in.
Fedex-
I use them almost exclusively to ship my ebay auctions. They have dropped the ball a few times on Maryland to West Coast stuff, but are very fast on most other shipments. Newegg(California) to Maryland is very reliable and fast. They do not beat the boxes up as bad as UPS. They are also much cheaper on some packages.
Fedex.com is a great way to ship, I print my labels out and the bill is automatically charged to my AMEX. I even get 10% too. Fedex.com shipping is the biggest thing that keeps me using them for ebay shipments, great time saver.
Airborne-
Never had any problems the few times I've received pacakges, very fast, very good condition. I may start shipping some of my ebay stuff with Airborne, especially if Fedex gives me any trouble.
USPS-
Well, the price is pretty appealing.

USPS is the way I ship and never had any problems. I've had fedex loose 3 orders break 2 {wich they forget to tell you about} and never be on time. UPS is ok and they are the only way I'll overnight stuff. On an different note NEVER EVER go to mail boxes ect to ship packages unless you have already paid for it on the UPS or FED ex site and printed your own labels they charge double the price and half the time forget to ship your stuff on time

I like UPS, never had a problem, worst ever from them the package had a minor ruffle in the corner, FedEX OTOH was very rude for a pickup, (started yelling at my wife for not having a stupid label filled out that we didn't have until she got there and on drop off, they hung a door knocker and left, never knocked, didn't ring the bell, none of it....... so I try to stick with UPS (must be a US problem)
