Dell4X DVD+RW..any good?

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...4&sku=313-1547

is there any reason this wont work on any computer? In other words does it have any sort of propriatary conenctions? Im sure it doesnt

But if you look at that pic in the link, what are those goofy things sticking off the side of the burner...are they drive rails??

Here is the thing that worries me...."This product has been tested and validated on Dell? systems to ensure it will work with your computer and is compatible with Dell? Dimension? 4500 / 4550 / 8200 / 8250 systems. "

Is that implying it wont work on any old comp??

I noticed it says "Min Operating System: Windows® 2000 or Windows XP"....you telling me it wont work on 98se or ME? or do they just say that cuz the Dells come with XP??

Does anyone know the brand of this thing??

JP

Can't answer all of the questions, but yes, they're rails. They use them on the 4550 and optiplexes. kinda nice really. No proprietary connections. I installed one for a friend about a month back and the driver that came w/ it was had samsung written on it, so that may be the brand. Comes w/ some roxio software. I would bet money that it works on 98. You still haven't made the leap to XP?

Ok, what I need to know is are the drive rails removable or is this some stupid propriatary thing?

It cant POSSIBLY have rails built in can it??

If I order tonight and call tommorow (or tuesday?) and find out it wont work in a regular comp will I be able to cancel it??

what is a "tray model"?

Does tray model just mean the regular old tray that you put the dvd or cd in...as opposed to the "slot" type cdroms where you slide the cd in?

Put my mind at rest so I can order.

yessir, the rails are removable, just two screws on either side. I have no idea what that means, but I guarantee it is the same standard form as any other optical drive. I do understand the anxiety, though. Keep in mind Dell has become increasingly difficult to deal with. Unless you live in India...b/c that's where a lot of your tech support calls go these days.

It's hard to tell from the small photo, but that looks like an NEC brand DVD+R/RW drive that has been rebranded. I have a 2.4x version sold under the Verbatim brand and I have seen that a 4x version of that drive is/has been released. All the other specs listed match up with my drive except the new 4x burn speed. If that is the case, I would definately recommend the drive, as I have backed up my entire DVD collection and archived thousands of mp3s and have not burned a single coaster with 100+ burns. Thats a good price too.

The thing will prolly work even in your 1963 Nash Metropolitan

However, Dell is sneaky about giving vague answers to warranty lengths, you may remember my pleading/whining thread asking folks to bombard them with Questions about why oh why do you NOT put full warranty info on the product page.

I forget if this one did or did not..

DELL DVD+R and CD-RW, $157.50
