$ I'm ASSEMBLING my 1st PC - HELP $

Hi people!

Over the last 10 or so days I've been going on a posting spree, posting to more tech forums than I can remember. When I got my Compaq Presario 5304 soon after we got married in '99, I thought it was a cool PC (huh?), now I just wanna smash it to smithereens!! I'm planning to assemble my very first PC in a few days -- I want pointers, suggestions, reviews, dos and don'ts...whatever. My husband's bemused....he doesn't think I (being so non-technical) can put it together....yeah? we'll see

A few key points:

*My budget is 300 MAX (incl S&H)
*I will use my future PC mainly for net-surfing and D/L'ing MP3s
*I don't need a mega harddisk - got no huge files
*I plan to keep my *deleted* compaq CT monitor and fugly speakers;
the *deleted* mouse and the crummy keyboard also stay
*Don't need no fancy Video card, on board would be fine.
*I'd like a decent sound card (listen to web radio), nuthin too exsy.
*I want to maximise my internet connectivity, I'm getting DSL but will those NIC's make any diff (if my mobo doesn't come with one?)

I went to pricewatch.com and came up with the foll. components, tell me what you think.

1) MOBO: ASUS A7N266VM -$57.99
2) CPU: Athlon Duron 1.3 GHZ - $35.88
3) HARD DISK: Quantum 30.7 GB EIDE 5400 rpm - $54
4) RAM: GENERIC 256 MB PC2700 DDR - $23.75
5)CASE: Mid ATX case - $20.99
6) FAN: Platinum Chrome ORb - 5 bucks
7) CD-RW: LG Electronics Intl Cd-rom drive 56x - 22 bucks
8) Audio: Sound Blaster Live - 18 bucks

Works under 300 incl s and h.
Whadya think?
Pls come up with better alternate suggestions keeping in mind the measly 300 budget
Am I missing out anything here? Pls let me know.
Looking foward to ur posts!

Pick up the latest edition of Maximum PC... or go to their web site... http://www.maximumpc.com this month's issue is all about 'maximum upgrades' at 'minimum costs'. In the mag, they mention that buying a Duron or Celeron might be a waste, that it would be better to buy an older Athlon or P4 (slower clock speed like a 1.4 GHz P4...)

Welcome to TechIMO---

Looks good, only thing I might change is the h/s fan choice to something "alittle" better, maybe a 7200 rpm drive rather then the 5400 but that will be fine for your plan---for a few bucks more maybe you can buy an Athlon instead of the Duron---check the vendors out where you are purchasing from with Resellerratings---maybe try Newegg for good prices and inexpensive shipping---and be prepared to surprise your hubby---because now that you have found "us" your computer building skills will shock and amaze him!

I don't know where you found the case for 20 bucks because I can never find a decent case and power supply for that price. Be sure you have have a good 300w PSU.

hey, rain_cloud:

Feisty - I like that in a woman! That, and one who still has most of her teeth - lol!

Welcome to Techimo. There are some great folks here, who are extremely knowledgeable, and more than willing to help. It's definitely one of the better forums,IMO.

I agree with everyone above ; particularly tkop's comments about checking each vendor's ratings at www.resellerratings.com . This will spare you much pain before ordering, as all vendor's are not created equal.

If you can bump that budget a little, to $51 or so for the CPU, you can get an Athlon XP 1700+ delivered from www.Newegg.com

I believe you should also stay away from generic RAM - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't ; Athlons like good RAM, at least that's been my experience, but it will cost you $46 delivered from Crucial, for PC2700. I've been burned on generic RAM, so I've learned my lesson. Also, since that board doesn't use PC2700,(it will run at PC2100 speed), you might save a couple of bucks by getting PC2100 SDRAM.

You've got a good price on the SB Live, but no budget for decent speakers. You might consider using the on-board sound until such time as you can afford,(check with us for good speaker deals), to upgrade the sound/speakers.

That board has on-board LAN, so you should be OK there for your internet connection.

The case seems awfully cheap ; I'm assuming that there's an even cheaper power supply included. Does it, in fact, include a power supply? This is such an overlooked, but critical part of a system, some add'l thought needs to be given here.

I've got two 15GB 7200 RPM drives out there in service. They seem to be performing well, although a little noisy. If you're disciplined and patient enough to send in rebates, a retail-boxed Maxtor or Western Digital, can be had, for $60 - $70 after rebates.

You didn't mention an Operating System. If you just have a Recovery Disk from your Compaq, it will not install on your new motherboard ; also, depending upon which OS you choose, you might need a floppy drive - most of the Compaq FDs that I've seen are "goofy" proprietary things, that won't fit in a std ATX case, so you prolly can't re-use that.

Although a pain, could you give us links, or at least the websites/vendors of the items mentioned above? This will all help us guide you in the right direction, and help you to avoid possible probs down the road.

Hope this helps a little. And good luck. . .

- Bill

I you are not in a hurry watch the "Steals and Deals" forum for items with a rebate .

I agree with "bill1971", I have always used Crucial memory at work and home without any problems. Crucial has a helpful website to get the memory for your motherboard. Crucial free shipping terms ,
"For a limited time, get free shipping on orders over $40
Place an order of $40 or more at Crucial.com and get free second-day shipping within the contiguous US.".

Good Luck
