Feisty - I like that in a woman! That, and one who still has most of her teeth - lol!
Welcome to Techimo. There are some great folks here, who are extremely knowledgeable, and more than willing to help. It's definitely one of the better forums,IMO.
I agree with everyone above ; particularly tkop's comments about checking each vendor's ratings at
www.resellerratings.com . This will spare you much pain before ordering, as all vendor's are not created equal.
If you can bump that budget a little, to $51 or so for the CPU, you can get an Athlon XP 1700+ delivered from
www.Newegg.com
I believe you should also stay away from generic RAM - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't ; Athlons like good RAM, at least that's been my experience, but it will cost you $46 delivered from Crucial, for PC2700. I've been burned on generic RAM, so I've learned my lesson. Also, since that board doesn't use PC2700,(it will run at PC2100 speed), you might save a couple of bucks by getting PC2100 SDRAM.
You've got a good price on the SB Live, but no budget for decent speakers. You might consider using the on-board sound until such time as you can afford,(check with us for good speaker deals), to upgrade the sound/speakers.
That board has on-board LAN, so you should be OK there for your internet connection.
The case seems awfully cheap ; I'm assuming that there's an even cheaper power supply included. Does it, in fact, include a power supply? This is such an overlooked, but critical part of a system, some add'l thought needs to be given here.
I've got two 15GB 7200 RPM drives out there in service. They seem to be performing well, although a little noisy. If you're disciplined and patient enough to send in rebates, a retail-boxed Maxtor or Western Digital, can be had, for $60 - $70 after rebates.
You didn't mention an Operating System. If you just have a Recovery Disk from your Compaq, it will not install on your new motherboard ; also, depending upon which OS you choose, you might need a floppy drive - most of the Compaq FDs that I've seen are "goofy" proprietary things, that won't fit in a std ATX case, so you prolly can't re-use that.
Although a pain, could you give us links, or at least the websites/vendors of the items mentioned above? This will all help us guide you in the right direction, and help you to avoid possible probs down the road.
Hope this helps a little. And good luck. . .
