Office Depot was offering a Sotec laptop for $800 (after $50 MIR). 1.2 GHz Celeron, 20 Gb HD, CDRW/DVD drive, decent video.

My honest opinion is that you can get better hardware for about the same price if you pay attention to techbargains.com. Dell always has coupons & discounts, which oftentimes will bring their laptop prices to around $700.

The IBM is from Tiger Direct.

Here's a refurbed Dell for $793. It's a Celeron. Something I've never even touched, let alone used extensively. What would be the performance hit with the Celery with the added RAM as compared the PIII?

AnakiMana,

You're right. Techbargains had a 2.0GHz Celeron Dell Inspiron for $699 shipped. I bumped the RAM to 256MB and it's still only $750. Nice.

Kids

So this leaves me with my other question. Is there going to be a noticeable performance hit with a 2.0GHz Celeron as opposed to an 800MHz PIII? This laptop will be mostly for surfing, email, and text editting.

In fact, after looking at the benchmarks myself... (even though they don't rate any Celerons faster than the 1.7ghz) I'd say the Celeron will be significantly faster than the PIII.
