Funny this should come up. I have a buddy of mine that just received a bowling ball that was shipped via UPS, and it came in with a big chunk taken out of it. He says that's not the first time that's happened. Me personally, I have never had a problem with either one of them.

i have generally had good experiences with UPS which is how most of my orders get shipped.
i think a lot has to do with quality of the local UPS drivers. i walk by the empire state building and often see the ups guys unloading...errr, "throwing" would be more correct. |

It's actually a fact that UPS is the worst of the major shippers when it comes to damaging freight.
I used to work as a warehouse manager before I got into the computer business and even the UPS drivers I worked with would admit that they lead the industry in number of damaged packages per number shipped.
If I remember correctly FEDEX had the lowest ratio of damaged packages to packages shipped but don't quote me on that.

I order stuff online at least 1-2 times a week... and I've rarely had any problems with damaged packages from fedex or UPS. FedEx does seem to faster from my experiances, but then again its probably just where it is shipped from.

Never USPS!
USPS just leaves the package on your front door without a note. One time I had the contents of the package stolen.
UPS usually leaves the package behind the gate in my backyard.
I always thought FedEx was more "professional" and more expensive. I guess it's not that case. Here's a good comparison of the 2 companies |

I should take pictures of a box in my closet I had a $400 processor (At the time) shipped in. Im still shocked it made it. I really lost some respect for newegg for switching to UPS by default.
I love fedex!

I have not had an issue yet with Fedex, always fast reliable service from them.
When it comes to UPS, They seem to treat packages like their own personal stress relievers. Also, It seems about 90% of the time, when I get the package, it is freaking hot as hell, for computer parts that is just not something you do. (Please note, this is right when they dropped it out, it was not sitting there all day) Many of parts were dead because of this, and since the package seems like it is perfect condition, they will not honor the insurance.
When it comes to USPS, the biggest issues I have is two things. First, the lazy mail carrier, if it doesn't fit in the mailbox, I have to go pick it up at the post office because they are so damn lazy that they won't get out of the truck. Second, delivery delays, On occasions it has taken quite some time to deliver packages. In one instance, it took two weeks for them to deliver a package in the same state, yet less then half that time to get one across the country.
EDIT: Oops look, its revival of the long lost thread!

fed ex hands down...with ups i have had packages try to be deliverd to the other side of the country, and others that misteriously dissappeared from tracing for a few weeks only to reappear in the same location they were already at
about the signature thing...it depends on what the shiper selects weather you have to sign for them i've had both types from all services....with fedex though you can pick it up later that night, ups you have to wait for 3 unsuccessfull deliveries before they will hold it for you the next day, this might be a local thing i'm not sure, but about the drivers, ups will either ring the door bell and run, or just leave it there and let my dog alert me, fedex will wait and have a conversation with me
