You could get an XP and mod it so that is can do SMP.

I bought the plus model of the gigabyte board at newegg for 250 and got a pair of 1200's for 69 each. I think the board dropped about 30 and the chips dropped about 10 each, rendering the total price ~340. You can skimp on the board if you want and get an MSI or Tyan, but they don't have all the features of the gigabyte. You can even buy XP's and mod them for SMP if you're daring enough. I'd suggest doing some homework before you purchase, as you might be looking for certain features which are only available on certain models but not on others which look exactly the same. Good luck with the search.

If you're not looking for smokin fast, I know the Duron 1.1g CPUs don't have the L5 bridge cut, so they do SMP out of the box.

I recently put together a dual 1.1 duron box pretty cheap. I was impressed too, it was quite peppy.

www.knowledgemicro.com has a good deal on the durons, and they also had a pretty decent MP price if I remember correctly.
