divx hardware

i am looking for a hardware divx player. found one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=32857 wanted to know if anyone knew of any others, or had any experience with this one. i really cant find anything. my only idea is to just build a pc for it. i think that might be the best way to go to keep up with latest codecs and such. i just want something i can keep by the TV. and something like that RCA is the most "fung shui"

A standalone divx player is reviewed here

http://www6.tomshardware.com/consume...124/index.html

I suspect the ebay one might be a misprint (divx instead of VCD).

Beware if you intend to watch DivX 3.x encoded content, as most hardware players do not support this popular format since it is a hack of MS MPEG-4 v3. The players from KISS are the only compatible set top boxes I know about. Also beware, as many hardware players balk at qpel resolution and global motion compensation as well.

I know of am indepedant software developer working on an ISO MPEG-4 transcoder to easily fix this problem, but I have not seen any publically available code to date.

A hardware divx player isn't a good deal now.

As robrich said, most players will not playback content that was encoded with the settings that makes divx look good. Also, it doesn't playback xvid.

A better deal is a laptop with tvout - that's what I've been using for few years now. And that supports subtitling.

Also, are you sure thats DivX and not Divx player? Divx was the old Pay-per-view format of DVD's that let you watch the Divx disc you bought for a set period of days, and if you wanted to watch after that, you would have to pay via a phone line. Divx was scrapped and discontinued, along with the discs and phone service.

I'm guessing its one of these, since RCA doesnt show that they have this product, and figured they would. Also I think the price is a little low for a stand alone DivX player.

More info here.

Im betting that DivX players are rare and expensive, at least at this point in time. I wouldnt expect finding a good deal on ebay for a true DivX player.

Since DivX is a hack of Mpeg4 and MP3, you should probably also see Mpeg-4 support on any DVD player that supports DivX playback.

EDIT - BTW, just to clarify, I was refering to the original ebay posting.
