computer shows East Coast

Has nayone ever attended any "marketpro" computer shows??

http://www.marketproshows.com/announcement.asp
There happens to be one this weeked in charlotte NC and next weekend in Richmond Va. Charlotte is 3 or 4 hrs away from me (cant remem which, lol) and richmond is about 3 hrs the other way.

There is another show coming on Apr11 to greensboro NC which is produced by "bluestar shows" http://www.bluestarshows.com I have been to about 3 of those bluestar shows so I sort of know what to expect.

I am wondering if anyone has been to any marketpro shows and what did you think of them.

i was planning on the Apr 11th show cuz greensboro is only like an hour drive but now I am thinking of one of the other shows also.

Any feedback??

Thanks, JP

NOOOOOOO!! Don't do it!! You'll become a computer show addict and you'll end up ruining your bank account credit rating, family life, etc.

Seriously, we have Marketpro shows in NJ and eastern PA fairly frequently. The shows are only as good as the vendors. I tend to go with the guys that are running a local operation in case anything goes wrong. The prices are phenomenal, especially if you're looking for used stuff, which is hard to find elsewhere.

I always bring my kids (but keep them away from the p@rn vendors).

I'm actually an Annual Pass holder for the Marketpro shows.

I have to agree, the shows are only as good as the vendors....

But I have gotten some fantastic deals there and actually know a few of the vendors personally now too so I order directly from them half the time.

There are good and bad vendors so use caution.....

Typically if I'm buying from a vendor I've never bought from before I will ask them to hook up whatever I am interested in and show me it works..... If they aren't willing to I move on to the next vendor.

(Best I can do is 'coming soon' from bluestar; marketpro does not get into New England states).
Good tips, though.

Marketpro shows are great, and I'd have no problem recommending them.

Do your homework before you go! Check out prices of the things you might be interested in buying. Sometimes (not all the time) you can still get the parts cheaper elsewhere.

Man, I miss the shows. I used to go once a month.

The best in New England are the Northern Computer Shows.

Here's another link with a few show links:

Well another tip may be to go there on friday and do all your buying so you have time to go home and test it and come back with your pistol if stuff is bad.

And as others said, I think you need to do your homework...first of all you should have an idea of WHAT you are going there to buy. In my mind I see cases and used monitors as good things to buy to avoid shipping costs..other stuff isnt usually much cheaper than ordering online.

Also you can find good odds and ends like slockets, P2 cpus etc, mice to match old dell or IBM systems.

of course I am thinking along the lines of buying stuff to bring home and resell.

And naturally there are lots of "trinket" items that I wouldnt touch with a sanitized 10 ft pole.

I do sort of dislike the "carnival" type atmosphere sometimes...."carnival" meaning slightly shady...like places openly selling stuff that says "not for resale" lol, and selling comps with Win98se "loaded" for you. And the porn stuff seems out of place too....makes it all like a "fringe" atmosphere.

has anyone had any luck in "haggling"...such as asking for a price break if you buy 3 Dell optiplex systems etc etc.

I got dude to throw in keyboard and mouse if I bought two optiplexes. And another time I saw a sign that stated that the used systems did not come with mouse and kboard,....so I was still looking a few minutes later and a guy asked if I needed help, i asked if they came with mouse and kboard and he said "yes"...so I told him I wanted 2 optiplexes...then him and other dude were talking in Chinese, lol...I knew what it was about..other dude says "sorry, systems dont come with mouse and kboard, cost $6 extra"....I gave him my best disgruntled customer look and said incredulously "Im buying TWO systems"...implying that surely he could throw in a cheap mouse and kboard...so he did, lol.

Anyway.

Im dead broke at the moment so maybe the whole point is moot!

A small story, and a tip:

Go to the shows with a few of your friends. When you spot something you want, make sure the vendor rep is nearby. They'll usually try to eavesdrop on your conversations.
Proclaim loudly enough (to your friends) that "The vendor in the other corner has the Athlon 2100+ system at the same price as this Athlon 2000+ system".
At that point, the vendor rep has heard your concern.. and *might* offer to bump you up to the Athlon 2100+ or 2200+ for 'no extra cost'. You then whine a little more to your friends about the other components.. and the rep will give you more of the faster/better quality components.
Walk to the vendor in the other corner, and proclaim that the competing vendor now has a better deal (etc... you get the idea. You'll end up with a much better system for less money.)

At least.. this is from my own personal experience

Ask if you can watch them put the components together and let you test everything out before they close the case. Check that the parts are the right brand, and not substituted with low quality brands, etc..

Just some random tips from my experience.

Computer shows

My mortgage, unsecured credit and I are have had the disadvantage of discovering computer shows.

You can't beat computer shows for chatchkis like odd cables, connectors, adapters and the like (in my experience). If you attend regularly, the vendors will get to recognize and become familiar with you. That can be a good thing, especially with legitimate vendors (most all I have encountered at Cogan, KGP and MarketPro shows are). I started getting a few add'l pennies/dollars/kruggerands off here and there because of my ugly mug! And my mother thought I'd never amount to anything! Go figure!!

I made an impromptu business relationship with one vendor who allowed me to abscond with cases, memory and other accoutrements at his HOME (where he stored his inventory) almost at will for the same or similar pricing. I spent HUNDREDS more with this vendor just in convenience alone and we were both happy campers. So, despite an ugly countenance, I guess I have a trustworthy face as well.

Another large vendor and I became friendly as well. A suave-looking, young Asian whom I used to call "Chĕpay Tyoo" ("pimp" in Mandarin). He got a kick out of a bikerish looking Italian guy's rough Chinese but he cut me some amazing deals on Maxtor hard disks (I eventually bought about 12 in total, 60-120GB). Yeah, they're OEM but he was a good dude and his retail business was about 5 miles from my abode. He also allowed me to buy at about show prices at his store.

Occasionally, you'll find resellers who move previously-owned and -leased products for great deals. From one vendor I bought an Agfa Duoscan scanner - any day of the week, they sell for $250 on ebay - for $25. It included the transparency stage which is a RARE item in its own right. Because I had bought several other items from him (including 7 - 17" monitors for $150 that were nothing short of exquisite) he told me he'd GUARANTEE that it worked properly AND would REFUND my money AND pay my entrance fee to return it next time they were in town. I also scored 8 - 30' BRAND NEW Raritan KVM cables (which sell for $150 each) for $80. Still in the packaging WITH adapters and Raritan part numbers. That's NEW to me.

The proviso was that I SPENT DOLLARS WITH THESE PEOPLE (OK, OK, my name is Lorenzo and I'm a compulsive shopper.). They're in business to move product; if you're looking to snooker a vendor for a PS/2 keyboard adapter just because he recognizes your BBQ sauce-stained Hamfest T-shirt, you're barking up the wrong spanning tree.

There are shlockmeisters there, too, but you have to have a little common sense and intuition. As was mentioned prior, look for vendors who also have storefronts and/or local addresses. You might pay a couple percent more if you buy from them but it's well worth the investment.

It's a good rainy day out, too. Just don't let the little ones eat spaghetti for a month because you dropped a nice bundle at a show.

P.S. The other advice you got here was sound also, so consider my post to be an adjunct.
