I can't find this in stores, so i might try here
Price: Under $500 would be nice
Quality maker 500Watt home theater system (4-5 speakers with sub) and the desk should be dual (VHS / DVD) with a 5DVD changer
I'm, hoping to find this...

I use an RCA RT2600 with a seperate 5-disc DVD player (you could use a VHS/DVD combo instead though). The receiver is 650 watts and puts out loud, rich, clean (<.9% THD @650W) sound and is inexpensive! The receiver was $280 and the DVD player was $200 making it all $480. You can replace the DVD changer with a vhs/dvd combo for like $150 and you're down to $430.
There might be better deals on receivers out there, but this is the one that I own, and it's really awesome!
**edit** have you ever seen a 5-disc combo deck or is that just the ideal?

My suggestion? There's no substitute for listening to these systems in person. Go early so you can listen to the system without all that pop cr@p in the background. My personal preference is to bring a good quality classical music CD; you get a much better idea of how well the system handles a wide range of frequencies.
I had a system all picked out based on reviews but when we went to BB to listen, the quality was poor at best. We ended up with a Pioneer system for $100 less that sounded much better. The only down side, it's a combo receiver/dvd/cd player so you can't upgrade one component at a time later.

iNeb, my point was that you have to actually go to the store, y'know, in person, to listen. You have to be there physically in person to hear the sound. Reading online reviews is worthless.
Do you have any stores where you live?

Well it's still good to hear what you want in person..
Like osprey said, reading reviews may mislead you.
