watch out for dell

A few words to those of you thinking about a dell desktop:
1. The 2350 has no agp slot-so no agp video cards.
2. Intel recommends a minimum of 300 wt power supply for
pentium 4s. ALL Dimension models come with 250. NO
upgrade from Dell available-NONE.
3. One of Dell's own engineers emailed me with a minimum of
a 350 wt power supply requirement for the radeon 9700.
4. May God have mercy on your soul if you ever need customer
service...long waits, eternal loops, one lie after another.
5. If you sell your computer and transfer the warranty, the
new owner apparently can order using your service id and
charge things to your credit card and have them shipped
to him-and no one at Dell even gives a crap.
6. It is a damn shame too-they offer a well priced product but
I would rather pay more for a company that is not so huge
that one hand doesn't know what the other is doing.

Dell sux. They want 5 times as much for a computer as I could build it for.

In other words RIP OFF!!!

Hey every one I know that I was exaggerating. But still you can build many of the same computers for cheaper. I did a newegg part check to replicate one of there computers and I came out about 500 dollars cheaper. From a $1500 computer

1) The hardware stuff is common knowledge - as long as your a half intelligent consumer who has done some initial research before making their purchase. You're not buying a 2350 if you're a hardcore gamer. I think Dell makes it relatively clear that Integrated video is your only choice as far as that system goes.

As far as power supplies - you're not getting a huge, highly powerful power supply when you order a Dell. It's a fact of life, get used to it. I have no problem with that - due to the fact that any Dell systems I've owned have always had 100% trouble free power supplies - EVEN the lower end ones.

2) Dell knows what they're doing. If they didn't, they wouldn't make their billions, and they definately wouldn't be a top PC maker. If they had true issues with their power supplies - they'd change their ways. But I don't really see a lot of people complaining about faulty power supplies. On top of that, Dell isn't targeting the user who is going to be throwing in or changing components every month. If you want to do that - build your own system. No one is saying that you're not allowed to do so.... Are they?

3) Your opinions on support and shady business practices are subjective. Most people have no problem with Dell, and most (including me) have minimal issues with their support department. Trying to put forth that "most" or "many" experience problems with their support due to a few crazy stories isn't very convincing... In my eyes, at least.

I have nothing against dell personaly they are just fine for the less computer litterate user that wouldnt be able to build a computer of thier own.

But me knowing what Im doing and knowing values of things have a problem with thier pricing. But they are a good reputible company. I suport them for that.

I just wouldnt ever buy one of there computers.

Very true, my friend...I'd like to point out that the new owner is not told that the card will be charged The service tag becomes' the new owners'. It is posted on the system, so it's the new owners' tag too. BTW, Bob, how'd you come out on that part of the whole thing?

No one at Dell gives a crap is exactly right, I've spent over six (6 hours of my life I'll never get back!!) with Dell in the last week.

Is there any way to protect against the credit card thing??

Of course I had to cancel my credit card anyway so it wont affect me at this point, but maybe in the future.

Anyway to avoid that problem??

JP

I'll tell you what JP, I'm the one that bought the computer from him. After finally figuring out the whole idiotic mess, I Called, talked to 5 or 6 people, telling each one the entire problem and telling them I wanted to use MY credit card from now on, you know what they said? "No, it isn't possible to do right now. You'll have to fill out another transfer of ownership" What?!?!?! He filled the first one out right and it never even asks about a CC on the stupid thing. How're you supposed to fix that. One more thing....they charged over $350 for the HDD in question. A 30GB HD. $350!!! Of course they credit it back after the nonworking drive is returned, but still...

what a gross exaggeration. price & build an EQUIVALENT system (same cpu, ram, etc) and i doubt you can do it at 1/5 much less 1/2 the price.

FYI, 250w PS are common in most desktop brand name systems. all the hp/compaq p4 systems use a similar PS. and i've rarely had a problem with insufficient power.

as for the CC & tranfer of ownership...that does appear to be a problem.
