I have the 18" from Dell which I bought refurbished along with the Dimension 4550 which is also refurbished and it is humming along with no problems, I just wanted to state that since I heard that Dell refurbished equipment are sometimes returned in unused condition due to overstocking by small businesses and such so if you want to save some money... I bought the LCD for $399 and its connected to a TI4200 DVI mode. Its only satisfactory for gaming, I play alot of FPS's and notice very slight lag in some games, barely even noticeable to the eye but I can tell the tad bit delay since I have fast reflexes when fragging plus Im used to gaming on CRT's. 1280 x 1024 can only go up to 60Hz and working in Photoshop is pretty much flawless (good vibrant colors). Its a beautiful LCD with a massive screen and the casual user would probably not be able to tell the the difference from the response time and I payed $399 so I aint complaining but Ive tried NEC LCDs and definitely recommend those if you find a good deal, also Samsung.

Thanks for the heads-up Crockett.

Office Depot has a Black Friday sale on this SVA VR-17S 17" LCD monitor. $229 after rebates.

As usual, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I'm thinking I'll go for a 17" top-of-the-line Viewsonic CRT for $195 ( G75).

I haven't read this thread in ages. I've been using a NEC 1760 NX since the middle of August. Great monitor with either an analog or DVI connection. Fast monitor with 16 ms response time and excellent colors. I highly recommend this monitor.

I love e-mail notification, if a thread gets revived months later, I'll still know about it

Anyway, I do have the NEC MultiSync LCD 1760V, and it has been great. Fast-paced games look very good as well.

I just read in Popular Science how the CRT is dying these days, with LCD, Plasma screens, etc. dropping in price and rising in quality. They're definitely right.

I have to echo the remarks from bombledmonk:
The Benq LCD's (w/ the 16 MS response time) are excellent!! They don't have DVI, but they have about the best analog picture quality for their price range. They are usually a bit lower than NEC & Sony & Mitsu. I know a few that have both the 15" & 17" versions and they look awesome and work excellent for gaming. Make sure that the model has the 16 ms response time.

Also, a word of caution on Tiger Direct & the Proview & Mag displays. If it's a rebate situation, I would suggest looking else ware (besides, I live in IL, so between shipping & sales tax most of the incentive is gone). My cousin is still waiting for his $100 rebate from Jan 2003 (gets the run around when trying to find out about it). Also, Mag innovision is now owned by Proview. I was unaware about this (as my clients & I have used Mag CRT monitors for years without any problems). But when my brand new Mag Trinitron 19" CRT went out (less than 2 weeks of use), it was a major hassle. Long story, but they never repaired it correctly and they charged shipping to and from the repair facility all they way in CA. Even when they did not repair it correctly the 1st time, they would not pay 1 cent for shipping - not even return shipping. Very rude customer service. Big hassle.

Take a quick look at like New Egg and others for the Benq17" - it would be worth your time.

Hope this helps.

Is there anybody out there w/ a quick rundown of critical specs for a 17-20" lcd?
I got the comments about response time, but what about other stuff?

Thanks!
