If you had it delivered its easy to return. Simply call them up and tell them you want a exchange because your item doesnt work. They will then send a driver out who will pick up your old stick and give you a new one. There is no creditcard charge for an exchange so as long as the local courier records that he picked 'something' up you should be good to go. And if it becomes a problem you now have a new product with a barcode and you can mail it into them

Mithin,

a) dishonest;
b) they'll credit the price of the old and charge the price of the new because they will be different products. When they see that the old one has had the UPC cut off they will reverse the credit.

Devildude, my opinion is sell it on eBay.

Why not just call Staples at 1-888-3STAPLES and tell her what has happened. I witnessed a dude returning a laser printer all opened up and in a mess with UPC cut at a Staples and they took it back. Dude siad he mailed in the UPC rebate and then plugged in the printer after destroying the box. Claimed it didn't work. So they called in the manager and they went through everything ---dude had a dell and it had a printer port and everything.

When the manager showed him on the printer box that it was compatible with windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 and XP the dude says he has windows 3.1 'cause the Mrs don't want to change now that she learnt it.

Lots of people laughed at this but finally the manager finangled a refund for him. The dude was like pushing 65 and it was a genuine case.

Staples are generally very lenient.

Good point. Plus, if you buy some other RAM they will be more likely to do the deal.

I did something very similar at OfficeMax a while back. I took everything back (less the UPC and rebate receipt) and explained the situation to them. The manager took another package of RAM, opened it up, gave me the stick out of it, and put the defective stick back in the box from the new one. They were happy and I was happy; the new one worked (and is still working) perfectly.

Staples took back a hard drive of mine almost a year later when the head crashed. Gave me a 3 gig higher drive because they didn't carry the other one anymore. She didn't refund the $60 difference in price, but I didn't expect nor necessarily want her to- I was ecstatic the way it was to swap it out for a new one locally!

Shahani, that laser printer wouldn't happen to have been a Brother HL-1440, was it?

I'm not very sure but it wasn't a HP and I'm fairly sure it was a Brother but I wouldn't remember the model.

Have you tried taking it back? They may take it in exchange for other RAM. Just explain the situation and that you sent the rebate off before installing the RAM, which appears to be the case from your above post.
