PC / components building / reselling

I had a bunch of fun building my first PC and I would like to do it for friends and family. I think I can get hard drives and memory dirt cheap after rebates (probably less expensive than being a reseller) but I would like to get set up as a reseller so I canget mobos and cases, etc. direct from a distributor. I might try to sell a couple complete PCs per month on eBay as a hobby business.

Does anyone know how much of a discount dealers typically get? I'm thinking of things like Epox mobos, Shuttle barebones PCs, CPUs, video cards and things like that.

I had a reseller permit in California years ago because I was purchasing $2,500 PC telephony cards from a CA company and we were using/selling them overseas and I wanted to save the 8% sales tax but I don't know anything about dealer markups on PC parts.

Thanks for any informed help.

The markup it depends on the reseller and the end user. There is no set price. We only go as low as 10% markup and the high depends on the item and customer (we sell to big corp.)

When you say "we" do you mean a distributor or dealer? For example, I could see a nice little online business buying Shuttle barebones and building them into neat little entertainment center PCs and make $100 or so on each one. But, the SN41G2 goes for $359 and no one is discounting them a dime. I would be very interested in saving $50 - $100 per Shuttle by being a dealer. On the other hand, the Epox RDA+ was about $135 at newegg.com when they were in short supply but when they got a bunch in stock the price dropped to about $105. I am comfortable paying $105 for that mobo.

Does that make sense? Dealers are pretty competitive and there isn't much markup once there is a lot of product in the channel but when something is new (like the Shuttle SN41G2 to return to that example) then dealers are selling for MSRP or higher!

I would love to get my hands on that for $300 even if I have to buy a dozen of them and take the risk that I can build them and sell them for a little profit (or do it for my friends and family).

Thanks for your input.

by being a dealer you will get some discounts ( duno fur sure how much) but you will not get huge discounts like a company would. with the bigs supplyers buying huge amounts will make them money and the distributers do treat them better than a small buyer(discounts and credit). As for the MSRP in this days economy very few people are selling at it. We mean reseller to answer your question. In other words you will still make money anyway

I am just going to wait until prices come down. I simply am not willing to pay $359 plus $20 shipping for the Shuttle SN41G2. When they get enough of them in the channel prices will come down and if they don't then they will not sell as many as they could otherwise.
