Need deal on AMD Mobo and/or CPU
Hey guys,
I need to a new AMD Mobo + CPU combo or either one of those for a very good deal. So gimme all your best ones. If combo is under $130, i can go with that.
The system i'm fixing contains(was):
IWill KK266
1.33Ghz Tbird
256MB SDRAM
ATI All-in-wonder Radeon AGP 32mb
It's NOT gonna be overclocked ... so i don't need much into that area.
I'm not sure if the CPU or the mobo blew on this system right now. That's why i need deals on both or the combos.
Thanks a lot fellas

TBolt, always a good place to look is Computer Geeks
Here's their CPU Page, I see an Athlon 1.33 for $39.65, use the code TECHBARGAINS at checkout to get that down to about $36 (10% discount) CPU Page
The mobo page HAD a nice ASUS that would have fit the bill, but it's gone
Take a peek here: JustDeals.com and see if there's anything with a KT133A chipset that handles SDRAM
You ought to be able to get away for lots less than $130.

I've ordered some slightly older, but new boards from Compgeeks and JustDeals. Justdeals is a little pricey on shipping for a single board.
I think that I would look for a more up to date combo. (Is that Iwill KK266 not a DDR board??). If it is, you might consider an Asus A7N266 for $72 coupled with an XP 1600+ or 1700+ for $50 - $60 or so.
If the memory is not DDR, I would go for the Biostar M7VIG Pro for $60 delivered, coupled with the same CPU choices above. The Biostar will accommodate either 168-pin SDRAM or 184-pin DDR, so you can upgrade memory down the road.
Both boards above are mATX - 1 x AGP, 3 x PCI, with on-board video,LAN, sound, and USB 2.0. And both are available at www.Newegg.com
Those are my choices in that budget range, (or less).

The board thunderb0lt has is a full size ATX with the KT133A chipset. It only supports SDRAM. Hope this helps you fellow deal hunters.
The Asus that Bill noted above has onboard GeForce 2 video, integrated AC97and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, plus an AGP 4X slot for future upgrades. Not bad for a mATX integrated board for $71. O.K. here's my deal. Your mission should you accept, is to take it and improve it for this fellow TechIMO member.
MSI Motherboard for Socket A Processor Model# K7T TURBO2 (6330-250) KT133A - RETAIL $65 Here @ Newegg (he gets to keep his Sdram)
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.33GHz 266MHz Bus Socket A PGA Processor -OEM Version Stepping AYHJA(Requires fan that supports 1.33GHz processor Stepping AYHJA) $48 Here @ Newegg Grand total $113 + $5 shipping = $118 (thats under his budget and all new stuff) Come on deal hunters, I know you can do better.

Hey, Sheryl:
Welcome to Techimo. for most of us here, you're absolutely correct. (When I built my own system, I didn't want anything on-board). But it all depends upon the intended end-use of the PC.
For a lot of folks, who game very little, today's on-board video, although sharing up to 32MB of RAM, suffices for a good many
folks.
But you make a good performance point, which is why I chose a couple of boards that had AGP slots.
My own build,( which was near top of the line when put together), was a 1.33GHz with that same AIW Radeon 32MB, which had very good performance at the time. I think the chip and vid card were each around $250! Now that card benchmarks somewhere near the bottom of the pile,(two years later).

Bah! I just re-read Tomteriffic's post and he's already got me beat with a used Athlon 1.33 for $39.65.
The Geeks also have a new Iwill KA266 plus mobo for $48 HERE but you'd need some DDR for that board. |

Mike:
How would you compare the KT133A chipset w/ 1.33 GHz CPU to the NForce w/ XP 1600+ ? I was just trying to be more forward thinking w/ the Asus and XP combo ; but I am curious as to what the performance difference might be? Thanks.

All things equal (nforce board with the same video card installed in the AGP slot so you could compare apples to apples) i'd go with the Nforce board + XP 1600 if you don't mind that it's mATX.
I just recommended a replacement KT133A board and 1.33 Athlon because of his budget, its full size ATX, and the fact that he'd have to get DDR for the Asus.
Mike EDIT: you might find it cheaper if you looked but Newegg has 256mb Kingston DDR PC2100 for $44. That would be $71 for the Asus, $50 for the AthlonXP 1600, for a total of $165. Also he might need a HSF cause I don't know what he's using now.

Yo t-bolt,
Listen to Bill1971.
You cannot beat this board (A7N266-VM, $72 shipped @Newegg) for value. On-board sound is fantastic, and video is very good; onboard lan does what it should do. It is also VERY upgradable. Along with what Bill mentioned, this board will support an Athlon 2600+(266 fsb), which means your next upgrade is a cpu...not a new board AND cpu. (XP2600+ is @ $265 now, in 2 years it'll be $60-$80 range...or less).
One suggestion is to use the Nvidia drivers instead of the packaged CD, as they work better. I have much experience with this board (12+ builds), and is very reliable.
Processor- don't give it a second thought- XP1700+ retail (includes a fan and 3 year warranty) from Newegg for $63 shipped. A 1333, IMAO, is a waste of money. Your goal is to upgrade, right? Yes, we're over budget by $5, but look what value you get for a lousy $5.
And yes, you'll probably need to get some DDR memory (PC2100), but you can get that cheap-$25-$30 bucks (after rebate), but never lose sight of the fact that the goal is to upgrade, and sometimes you have to bite the bullet. To buy a mobo/cpu combo for PC100 or PC133 would be, again, IMAO, GOOFY.
Depending on where you live, you could right now be earning the extra dough shoveling snow!!!!
I'm serious, though, save up the extra money so you can do the upgrade properly...then you'll be sure to be happy both now and in the future.
For what it's worth...
