sales tax question

What tax do the online retailers charge ? Is it he % where the
item gets shipped or is it the state where the billing address is ?

Thanks

I was wondering this too, it seems that any order I place online (mind you I'm in Canada) doesn't get any provincial sales tax, this means any order over 100$, shipping is less then the tax would be, incentive to order online for me, unless they made a mistake and governement nabs me but I didn't lie about anything (it's 8% PST 7% GST(federal) here)

In the US, you won't get charged sales tax unless the online company has operations located in the state in which you reside. In that case, you will get charged your state's normal sales tax.

On the other hand, many states technically require you to report the purchase and pay the tax if its not collected by the seller (of course hardly anybody actually does this)

There was a story on NPR about this just this morning. Apparently, some online retailers are getting nervous about being hit with a big tax bill or lawsuit from certain states and have already begun to collect sales tax, even when they aren't remitting what they collect to the state! Financial times and state revenues being what they are, the states are beginning to see this as a potential windfall.

The problem, at least for right now, is that federal law prohibits states from this kind of extortion. But the winds of change are in the air.

I shop Canada and in another Province. Shopping in another province means that I don't pay the Provincial Sales Tax 7 or 8%, (PST) depending on which Province. I do get hit with GST though. (7%) and applicable shipping and handling charges. If I shop over the border I get hit with what ever tax the State requires and then my own Provinces PST and GST +Duty + shipping in the States + handoff shipping from the border to a Canadian Courior.

Shopping Crucial I still get a better deal in the states then shopping in Canada.

Cheers!

That depends on where you look But I just placed an order from Toronto Ontario (my province) for a duron 1.3 and Volcano 6CU, total before T's was 84.59, After shipping (10$) and taxes it was only 101, they didn't charge me PST.

(But I order stuff from BC also to avoid PST, why not, I already pay tonnes of different taxes, and the price is sometimes cheaper, (Vibe computers out there, I haven't ordered from there but they seem like a good place to shop, and NCIX, (But I found a horrible delay before they actually shipped)

I can order from T.O. (PCCanada) and have it here almost next day, sometimes (If I order late) it takes a bit longer (2 days).

Ah well, I order where the prices are best, still buy some things local, but now I have to account for tax (if something is 125$ local and 125$ on the net, I can have it delivered to my door for the same price.
