Kids Dell's Smoking Speakers may = Fire Hazard

A member mailed me about this problem arising from the Dell 2350 system speakers.

Everyone who bought a system lately needs to inspect the speakers for a buzzing transformer

Smoke after Buzzing is a cause for CLOSE INSPECTION !!
trying to be correct here and not say too much.

Thanks, Doc:
I have three or four sets of those that I picked up pretty cheap from Directron, about three months ago. Too bad there wasn't a serial no. series / production date that would narrow the problem down. Guess I'll just plug 'em in, listen for a buzz, and sniff for a smell.

(Doc - managed to pick up a pair of those Koss UR/15's on Friday for $11.99 ; great headphones for the money - and lifetime warranty - gotta register on-line - thanks!).

- Bill

Doc thanks for the PM, Is Dell doing any recall on them or anything? I will have to get ahold of the guy I sold the one to and have him check it out.

Dell Part number 06941V, which are the shorter, more squat H/K made speakers with the ports in the bottom front have a nasty habit of having their amplifier circuitry come loose from within the (obviously) enclosure with the amp and power switch in it.

Folks around here have been getting a lot of runaround from Dell about them, very demeaning "talk down at you" kind of stuff, even to techs who could run circles around the Dell guys. If you have a pair, check them out for internal rattles, since sudden death may not be far behind. Th eonly saving grace is that they discontinued carrying these things and they were getting blown out around here for about $7 a pair, so no great loss.

But, if you have a Dell system with these, check 'em out.

Is the problem in the speaker or the little power transformer adapter unit?

Thanks for the head-up Doc. My parents got one of those sets awhile ago. Guess I better call them in the morning.

IMO -- Dell should drop H/K and consider another speaker vendor. This is more than likely (I would pray) just me, but the HK's on the last two Dell system's I've owned have failed within the first 2 months of ownership. And I definately don't mis-treat my hardware.
