Australian equivalent of Newegg
Hi
I'm new in Australia and looking to buy a prebuilt computer or building my own pc. I've got a budget of A$1700= US$1000
I've seen in this forum lots of great deals like newegg.com for US residents. I'm wondering if any of the Aussies at Techimo can recommend any good computer component sellers?
I'm thinking of going with chillipower.com.au, they quoted me the following system for that money:
AMD XP 2100+ CPU
Gigabyte GA-7VAX Motherboard (KT400, DDR400,USB 2.0)
256Mb PC2700 DDR-SDRAM (333Mhz)
40Gb 7200rpm ATA100 Hard Disk Drive
Leadtek Geforce 4 TI 4200 128mb w/ VIVO
AC 97 integrated & 440W Speakers with Subwoofer
1.44 Mb Floppy Disk Drive
PS2 Multimedia Keyboard
PS2 3key Scroll Wheel Mouse
ATX Midi-Tower Case with 350W Power Supply
56k V.90 Internal Modem
17" Colour FLATSCREEN Monitor
CDRW 48x24x48 Liteon
HP 3420 Printer
What do you guys think?
Thanks

Hmm... I'd say that's a little steep, but then, that may be a decent price for Australia. I really have no way of knowing. I'm sure you could buy it for less here in the US.

Im a fellow aussie ,
And i think that its fair to say that you have a "FAIR" deal on your hands
17" Colour FLATSCREEN Monitor
Leadtek Geforce 4 TI 4200 128mb w/ VIVO
Dont know about mobo , how about an asus mobo????
These bits would be over $1000 to purchase seperately...
If they are building it and installing software go with it..
If you have to put it together, have a look around and hit a few pc shops up, you will find these parts a little cheaper..
Good Luck
Anyone have comments on Gigabyte GA-7VAX Motherboard (KT400, DDR400,USB 2.0) ....................

I've read some recently bad reviews about the KT400 chipset. Is it possible to get an NForce chipset? That seems to be the best right now. If not, the KT400 chipset is at least the next best thing...

These bits would be over $1000 to purchase seperately... | Its a flat CRT monitor, not an LCD (aka "flat panel") and in the US...they'd cost (monitor, vid card, mobo) about $300-$450 depending on whether they're OEM/retail and the quality of the monitor.

yes its a flat CRT as far as I know. They do build it, so thats included in the price, but no OS - I'll probably run RedHat 7.2. As far as I've found on the internet, that seems to be a good price for Australia, compared to buying a Dell for instance where you spend a lot of money for the brandname.
daveleau:About the nforce chipset, I thought it had some flaws, and that nforce2 is much better. Is the nforce(1) better than the KT400 chipset? And is it worth it to pay more(?) for an nforce chipset? I've got a CS degree, but they didn't teach us anything about HW. I don't understand that a mobo can make too much of a difference when it comes to overall speed.
Personally I'd like to go with a mobo that will be able to handle newer Athlon XPs when they come out, so that I only have to buy a new CPU later on.
How can you tell up to what speed CPU the mobo can handle, the FSB multiplied by the CPU multiplier?
Thanks for the replies.

I did try and base/compare my selection to Sharkyextreme's December gaming value guide. http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/...708_1557141__5
For a thousand green dollars they build a xp2100, gf4ti4200 128mb, 17" monitor, 256pc2700, so I think that's a fair price. Ok, they include the price of winxp, but I'm calculating a CDRW as opposed to their DVD ROM. Plus they choose the prices from the cheapest vendor, i'm getting it all from 1 vendor. And there's the whole US prices vs AU prices. Oh, and don't forger the HP printer.

Check These out.... topcom technology computer empire best deal 4 u the disc shop surpass computers
These companys are in brisbane but most can ship anywhere,
Also the latest trend in retail sales in australia is
"if you find a better price they will beat it by 10%"
This will give you a good guide to pricing locally,
I put the links to thier home pages so you can browse through
and have a look for complete systems...
Screw them down and play them against each other to your advantage, Dont forget that these are thier LISTED prices
and they would have to be making $$ on these systems so
Go for it and haggle them, Its your right, Dont be scared
to ask for something thrown in for free.(an lcd monitor) maybe adding some more dollars in..............
Good luck and let me know how you go with it........

That seems like a pretty nice setup stamenkd, and at a good price. Tech Buy are pretty popular and they seem to have a wide selection so you could check out some prices there.
Anyway, good luck!
