That is because it is a DVD-RAM drive not a DVD-RW. It is just saying that it can read DVD-R's and DVD-RW's.

I was thinkin the same thing then I saw this "Drive can playback and record 4.7GB and 2.6GB DVD-RAM Discs". Does that just mean record from the disks and not onto?

ever hear of Google?

From Toshiba:

DVD-RAM Drive
SD-W2002
For industry standard, high-capacity rewritable optical storage, look no further than Toshiba's SD-W2002 DVD-RAM drive. With 4.7GB of capacity on a single-sided disc and 9.4GB on a dual-sided disc, the SD-W2002 provides unprecedented performance to benefit a range of applications including multimedia development, backup and data archiving. The SD-W2002 DVD-RAM drive conforms to all DVD industry standards to ensure media interchangeability with other DVD-RAM drives.
Uses Rewritable Single or Dual sided media

Reads DVD-ROM, DVD-R, and all CD-ROM Media

From Cnet:

Despite its high price, the SD-W2002's speed and ease of use make it a good choice for professionals who archive large amounts of data regularly.
The good: Fastest non-SCSI DVD-RAM drive we've tested to date; easy installation; DVD video playback software.
The bad: Expensive initial investment; some incompatibility with other DVD formats.

If DVD-RAM is the heavyweight of optical storage technologies, the Toshiba SD-W2002 internal drive may be the champ of the division. It suffers from DVD-RAM's characteristic flaws: a high sticker price and incompatibility with other optical drive types. On the other hand, it's the fastest non-SCSI DVD-RAM drive we've tested to date. And its ease of use and low cost per gigabyte tip the balance in the Toshiba's favor.

Yes ive heard of google. I just wanted to see if anyone knew. I read other reviews and they all pretty much said the same thing. But this site as i said before wrote: "Drive can playback and "record" 4.7GB and 2.6GB DVD-RAM Discs". With the record part in there it threw me for a loop since no other sites said that in the description. So by asking here I thought maybe someone could clarify it. Anyways I just decided it was a typo.

Yes it can read and write discs, but to a rather old and unpopular DVD disc standard that brought only modest market acceptance. DVD+ and DVD- are the standards to look for in today's models.
