Food Disgital camera decision.

Well i've come to a decision between the Olympus C-4000 and the Cannon Powershot S45, i was wondering what the community thought of each camera, and which would be better. Just some nice humbe opinions would be nice, pros and cons bout them.

thx,
aznlurkerz

camera info

I'd recommend a visit to www.photo.net. They have an excellent tutorial on digital cameras. It is very complete and almost overwhelming; thought I was ready to sell them after going through the entire download

personally i would recommend the canon s45
over the olympus 4000 because i've had 2 olympuses and
both caused me problems
also check out the reviews of both cameras at
www.imaging-resource.com
i dont think they have the review for s45 yet so look at the s40 review(both the s40 and s45 are the same cameras except some little things)

hope this helps

big advantage Canon The S45 has more flexibility in movie modes. It has 2 movie resolutions in AVI format (more versatile), while the Olympus has only one mode and it is a QuickTime format .

moderate advantage Olympus They both have rechargeable battery capability. The S45 comes with a proprietary rechargeable while the Olympus uses AA batteries and you can get a plethora of rechargeable AAs inexpensively.

moderate advantage Canon the Canon comes with a 32MB card. The Olympus comes with a 16MB card.

Big advantage Canon The Canon uses Compact Flash cards of which you can get up to 1GB of memory, or you can even go higher with IBM MicroDrives. The Olympus uses Smart media and this is capped at 128MB.

Draw The Olympus has a more dynamic lens, while the Canon has more preset settings for different situations (portrait, night, panoramic, etc). This makes the Olympus simpler to use, while the Canon has more modes to set the camera up in.

moderate advantage Olympus The Olympus is about $50 cheaper than the S40 and 70-100 cheaper than the Canon.

Very minor advantage Canon The Canon has a 3X optical/3.6x digital zoom. The Olympus has a 3X optical/ 3.3x digital zoom.

Personally, I would go with the Canon. It is a little more expensive, but it has more options and you can get a much larger memory card for it. It also comes with a rechargeable, and cameras EAT batteries like mad. If it were me, I would order another battery from Canon. The battery directly from Canon is $70 (part NB-2L). You can get a lot more accessories for the Canon as well, including an underwater case for water photography. (That is just really cool! ) The only thing that would make me hesitate is the price on the rechargeable. You can get a set of 4 rechargeable AA batteries for less than $10 and there are even solar rechargers for them, in case you are out at the beach or somewhere away from an energy source. In the end, the larger memory card and more options makes me lean to the S45.

Hope this helps.

Dave

PS- I have the Canon S20, 3.3MP Canon and love it. I only wish it did movies and I wish I had one more battery. But the camera is over 2 years old and was one of the first 3.3MP cameras. It still does great work and has traveled all over with me throughout the southeast and to Europe!

From my personal experience with Digital cameras .. i would recommend Olympus C-4000 ...
Olympus produces very nice color balance in difficult lightening positions ... my No.1 demand in a digital camera is the photo quality (sharpness, colors, resolution ... )

I`m not saying that Canon is not good .. i only like Olympus more

I have the Canon S45 and like it a lot so far. Very easy to use, lots of flexibility. The only thing I haven't got quite used to is one important button -- the multicontroller -- that has too many degrees of freedom: left, right, up, down, and straight in (it's hard to do the last one rather than one of the other four). I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I'm not very manually dextrous. Other than that, it's great.

Yeah, check www.dpreview.com, and see which one falls more into what you're looking for. I prefer that site because they do a lot of solid technical testing of the cameras, in addition to the traditional assesments of ergonomics, features, and "feel". I mean, we measure our video cards via standardized tests, why not do the same for cameras?

A few notes:
Movie modes: are you buying a still or a video camera? How important is this to you? For me it was a non-factor (I use a Nikon CP 995, btw).

Batteries: Yeah, you will need rechargeables. Proprietary ones aren't so bad if they're Lithium Ion (Long-lasting and light). Again, check the sites for how long a charge will last. Rechargeables AAs may not be so nice if the camera only lasts 20 min on them.

Cards: The cards that are bundled with the camera are purely for show. Expect to buy memory.
I second daveleau's statement Re: superiority of CF cards. Currently, the "Sweet spot" for price/storage on CF cards is 256 megabytes. For a 3.4 mp camera, that will give you something like 250 high-quality jpegs.
Microdrives -- some people like them, but they slow down the write process even more. Straight flash is getting pretty darn cheap.

Presets and prosumer features: this is all about how you take pictures. Nobody can dictate your style. Which approach is more to your liking?

Digital Zoom: Ignore any discussion of digital zoom. Digital zoom just crops the picture to the center.

They're both fine cameras, and you're gonna find canon and olympus fans in abundance
