PCI 56K Modem
I'm putting a machine together for my father and I need a good quality PCI modem.
I've had broadband for a couple of years now so i'm really out of the loop on whats good.
I know that the last time I looked at PCI modems the opinions and reviews were not great.
If I remember correctly the main issue being the draw on the CPU.
Anyhow, need something good.
Thanks
WB

Look for a "hardware modem". They don't draw from the CPU so they don't affect the system performance like "win modems" do.

Hardware modems don't have to be external though. An internal hardware modem is cheaper than an external one, but they are more expensive than the winmodems.

Thanks for the replies.
"Win" modem, that term rings a bell.
That is the reason I kept trying to buy mobo's with ISA.
I have a diamond supra pro? , something like that as I know it was a Diamond. Best 56k modem I ever bought.
Off to look.
Thanks

| USR #2977 or 2976 @ Newegg for $40-$42 are my favorite hardware modems.

I've purchased 2 USRobotics modems off eBay for ~$25 shipped each. Their 5610 and 5610A are V.90, and 5610B is v.92 (but you can get a BIOS flash for the 5610A to make it v.92)

I have three PCI modems (2 of which are still in the boxes). I will deal if you want. I am pretty sure they are v.90. Let me know if you are interested and I will email the details.
