A friend wants to store her vacation photos on an external drive.
Any suggestions size/maker/best deal?

Check over in the for sale forum. I believe Shahani has 40 GB one for a reasonable price. It's a Maxtor I think. I bought one from him for my daughter's computer and it's great. USB 2.0 for a fairly decent transfer rate.

i second doc's suggestion...for storing pictures, CDs are best.

it makes for easy transport and copying to other machines as well.

but if you're really bent on getting an ext. drive...then maxtor would be my pick.

I never thought about the cd issue-she has a burner already-somehow seems cooler to put them on an external drive that can hold 10s of thousands of pictures - cd's are more stable(?) or is that a bad assumption?

CD's if kept and handled well are more stable. All HDD's are prone to failure eventually, so you have to back them up anyway. How? CD-R, of course!
