Local vendor prices. Check for a good laugh.
I live in a small town of about 20,000 people so I don't have immediate access to large PC device vendors like Best Buy, OfficeMax, or Office Depot etc. The only local vendor charges outragous prices. They are online if you'd like to be robbed as well @ www.askfccr.com. Check out the CPU and video card prices for a really good laugh. They have an AMD Xp 1800+ OEM for the low, low price of $288.41. Hurry there's only one left in stock! Thank God for online vendors like newegg!

Even with lots of major stores locally, I shop almost totally on-line as the B&M stores usually won't honor the web prices.
I do luckily have a Mom & Pop electronics store that has some very cheap items.

Living in a small community in the midwest forces me to do all of my parts shopping online. It's to bad that the only local vendor charges such high prices-an AMD 1800+ OEM for $288.41 when I can get it @ newegg for $67.00. I'd like to be able to quickly pick up parts locally but @ these prices I'll wait the 3 days for newegg or any of the other online vendors that I use to ship it. It makes things like a simple memory upgrade or a new graphics card upgrade a bit of a pain though.

I too do most shopping online unless staples has a good deal as it is the only major B & M store. I have started buying my cases at the new Mom & Pop's store here in town as they are good cases and cheaper that I could get them online shipped.

That vendor probably bought that CPU when it first came out and now doesn't want to lose their shirt by selling it at the devalued price. I had a friend who owned (note the past tense) a small computer shop. He bought RAM when it drop to around $1/MB, thinking it was good time to buy. It never stopped dropping and he lost a bundle on it. Within six months RAM was around $.10/MB. I bought four 256MB sticks of PC133 SDRAM from Crucial for $27/ea. About one-tenth of what my friend had paid six months earlier. That's why many small vendors don't stock CPUs or RAM. They can't make money.

I understand their dilema. But not selling it and holding onto it doesn't make them a dime. The worst part is he'll probably sell it as an upgrade to someone who doesn't know any better and charge them $40.00 an hour to install it(I believe that's his hourly rate still). Currently they have an upgrade special for a new motherboard(PCchips), a 1.33 AMD T-Bird, and 128mb SDRAM for $300.00. I don't think this includes installation. He installs it using your HDD, PS, case, soundcard, graphics card, speakers, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. You get a low-end mobo, and outdated CPU and RAM. He keeps your original hardware.

$665 for a P4 2.0ghz....... Geez I feel sorry for whoever ends up buying that.
"Yessir, we looked at your ($999 Dell) computer and it needs a new cpu, but don't worry because we just happen to have one right here. Parts and installation will only run you $705. Hello?...Hello?...."

now I can outwait anything or anyone.

I've been looking over his prices a little more. This guy is robbing people:
Gforce 2 Ultra (nice in it's day but ancient history now) $338.79
Radeon 8500 64mb VIVO $488.87
Maxtor 100gb 5400rpm drive $346.19
All of his prices are high, thats nothing new, but whats up with the above stuff? Does this guy really get any business?

"Hey, there's a really fast chip for $x. It's new though, so I'll wait for it to come down a bit"
The next week- "Oh hey, it's dropped by 15%! Lemme see if it continues like this..."
A week later- "OH WOW! There's an even faster one out, but it's quite a bit of cash... it should come down soon though."
EVENTUALLY, I'm gonna get around to building a new system. In fact, I saw a mobo/CPU combo just the other day, but I'm waiting for it to come down.
