Lite-On is a good brand! I've also have a (cheap) IO Magic & Hi-Val. Nero Burning Software makes even a cheapie work good.

I have a Liteon 32x12x40x for 2 years with no probs! Just one rule of advice: stay away from BTC and Samsung's CD-R/RW drives. I had one of each and they broke within 3 months and they didnt honor my warranty. MSI also has some good CD R/RW drives I hear. Anyone use those? I also use a HP 8230e USB 1.0 drive thats slower than anything but it gets the job done really nice.

The LIte-Ons are pretty good drives IMO. I have two that are nearly 2 years old, no problems. And yes some versions of nero are locked to the drive thay came with. Mine wouldn't find my mitsumi 4x drive. The retail version of Nro is a lot betterthat the Express version too

Just read here that some Sony drives are rebadged Lite-on drives...
That opens up yet another Lite-on CD-RW drive source for those that shop carefully enough.

A quick reply then back to studying:

I got the LiteOn 40x burner, and it's great, burns nicely, no problems with the 80mm media I needed to write.

Also, if you're considering, even though it wasn't advertised, the burner came with Nero 5.5, a LiteOn only version, which was good because the Yamaha version was locked and refused to use the LiteOn drive.

Sometimes TDKs *ARE* Lite-Ons.

They are considered the best drives hands down (some people like Plextors, but those can be twice as much). They also make drives for a dozen other companies.

Heads up! Visit the link in my prior post.. it tells how to edit the drives firmware (before you flash it) to make a drive read as a different model. But only do that if you are brave, just in case things do not work out for you.

I like my Lite-on. Got some killer coupons from Dell and got it thru them. Well, that was last year, so I guess 100 bux with free overnight shipping isn't that good anymore

it is a 32x and I also got a 16x DVD
