Dell beats the other guys like gateway, compaq and HP.

Seems like a nice system, is that his first comp?

Nice
I assume you already have a monitor?

Building a PC is not for everybody.. thats like saying everybody must build their own car Some people just like to plug it in and go
Let us know how it goes!

sounds like a good comp to me. personally i think dell makes good comps, and from what i understand they have great customer support (which for a non-guru is a good thing).

As for printers, i've found that cannon, epson, and hp all make good printers. what i would recommend is finding a printer from each company that is in your price range and then try and find some comparisons. as for an APC, they're are more than worth the cost and i would highly recommend getting one.

sweet, don't let the naysayers affect you.

dell makes a very respectable pc which will fulfill almost every need except for hard-core gamers. and if you should happen to get one during their 'specials' period, then you've got an even better bargain.

there are lots of people here who love to trash dell yet i find it ironic that there is a *sizeable* number (one could even argue the majority) of posts here on techimo are from people asking for help for their home-built systems. in fact, were it not for boards like these, many of them would probably still have problems trying to figure things out!

so enjoy your dell when it arrives...you did not make a mistake.

ps. typing this on an hp p3-1ghz which has been rock solid and has given me zero problems. that's right...no BSOD, no random reboots, no mysterious freezing. quite simply, it works and it's quiet to boot!

I wouldn't worry what kind of pc you have if it runs well. I had a dell's for years. Starting with a p1 133 w/t 32 mg of EDO ram onboard vid. IT was fast for its time. Played nothing but some Ski or die game. It was awesome. But when you feel the need to build something and you know what parts you want, go 4 it. It took me 7 years to get enough nerve to build a pc. It was fun... and definately something try out.

xp1800 palimino(locked) @ 2000+
volcano 7+
gf3 ti 200 (still runs games great!)
40 gig maxtor 133
512 ddr
antec 350
dell OEM dvd
LG 24x cd writer 8 mg cache
Digidoc 5
Sb Audigy Gamer
Lan
DSl

system is kinda old now, but it still runs great.

It took me a while till i finally jumped the gun and scoured the net for weeks to find the parts I wanted.

yea, he is using my ol monitor. The sys he has now works ok but all these new games will not run on it. It's sorta old. Now he can do ALL of his homework on it and burn his mp3's and take another step in learning about em.

We are looking at 2 epsons, C82 or 5550. They both seem fine.
The APC I guess I'll buy locally next week.

Thanks fer da reply's!!!!

LOL I get cracked up when I hear about a XP 1700+ system and a gf3 called old.

I have a PIII800, 512MB PC133, 30GB HD, and a GeForce 256 32MB and I can still play games!

Long live 4-years-or-less-old-hardware!!!

Cody

Looks like a great system and I am envious of that ATI 9700 Pro vid card! NICE.

Thanks sixpac, that was a bit to swallow pushing that 9700 Pro button. I read up some about it, nice article at Tom's Hardware. We had been waiting and waiting and if he can learn more and play more on this system, it should be worth it. It's kinda funny that this is the cheapest of the 3 systems I've got over the years..

I know he will probably need a laptop for college, but we've got some time before that happens......whew
